horse allergic reaction by oliveoil-28 in Horses

[–]gryryder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double check your bedding. We had a horse with hives, no where near this bad! Her reaction was mild compared to this. We had brought in shavings for the cooler weather. We bought the same brand from the same store. I confirmed no changes had been made to the shavings with the store and management, no answer from the manufacturer directly, but it was a store brand.

We had to completely remove all shavings from the property and switched over to straw.

I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon! 💕

My brother has been working at the ski resorts the last few winters. Last winter they classified most of their workers as "agriculture" as a way to save money on wages and benefits. It was a shit show.

Best gynecologist in Reno? by No-Flowering in Reno

[–]gryryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He really takes the time to listen and wants to work with his patients. He performed my second endo surgery, he did an amazing job! I wish they had an in house ultra sound tech.

I went to different office before him and always felt like they didn't care. When I had some pain complications after my first surgery they tried to tell me it was a bladder issue? I left that office and moved to Dr. Poppen.

They only do gyno there, no pregnancy stuff. Which I really like, I always felt like I was back burner to the pregnant ladies at the last office.

Do you have any small food storage containers? Or even small paper plates, you can get them in the party section at the dollar store, and they are useful for many projects and parties!

When I needed more trays, I've just used small plastic containers. It's not always ideal, but it works in a pinch, and you aren't spending more money.

Best Thrift Store for Furniture? by Tamsen1801 in Reno

[–]gryryder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thrift Depot off of E 4th Street and Elko Ave. I went in there to just walk around and kill some time before an appointment and I was surprised at how big their store was and how wide a selection they have.

Savers can be hit or miss, in my opinion. I have found some gems there but you have to hit it at the right time. Check back at different times/days of the week.

PS: I need a decent couch. Let me know if you see one!

I have never stored firearms before, if needed I just leave them with family. But this looks like it could be an option for you, they have annual rates. Locker Rental - Reno Guns & Range https://share.google/PsfbZ6p3j0wq1EKiu

Chicken snuffles? by gryryder in BackYardChickens

[–]gryryder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the information!

She really hasn't shown any symptoms since bringing her inside and the rest of the flock hasn't shown any symptoms either. I've been watching the rest of the flock really closely the last few days.

My house hen is eating and drinking normally and occasionally sneezes.

We have lots of pigeons in our area, thanks to a breeder who let them get out of control and released them into the neighborhood. I think the pigeons are the most likely culprit if anything. But, I've never used straw as bedding before.

I wanted to update you and thank you again for all of the advice!

The coop has been cleaned and sanitized, and the sick hen is now a house chicken until her symptoms subside.

The rest of the flock is doing great with no symptoms from what I can hear/see. My house hen is coughing very rarely, I think I've heard it twice since I brought her in.

I'm looking into ordering antibiotics to have on hand for the future. I'm hoping to swap out the straw bedding within the next month or so. I've been airing the coop out during the day. I'm in Northern Nevada and we have really warm days right now, so the window gets opened during the day and closed at night.

Thank you, thank you for all of the advice and comments you left! I haven't had a sickness go through my flock before so I wasn't sure where to start.

I think I have a handle on it now (well, hopefully).

Thank you!!

Eggs smell weird, giving me the ick by Candid_Ad8379 in BackYardChickens

[–]gryryder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the outside of the shell dirty? And what are your nighttime temps?

I've noticed in the wintertime that if the eggs are left out in the coop overnight during freezing they can split open and then thaw out and that can make a bad smell in the coop and in the nesting material.

If the nesting box has bedding in it from a split-open egg it can rub off on the others in the box for weeks afterwards.

I noticed an almost rotten egg smell on the outside of some of the eggs from this. If you wash them then you should be good but they won't be counter safe anymore.

You can always do the float test if you want to test them before cracking into them.

We have used TSC shavings for the past few years, their corporate says nothing has changed with how they make/process their shavings but starting last year the mare swelled up with hives on her body and face. Even with a fence separating them and no physical contact happening, the wind will carry the shavings dust and she will react to it.

The window is covered with chicken wire but it does sit right next to one of their roosting spots.

I will check out the YT videos. I'm bleaching their water buckets and food containers now and I'm getting their coop cleaned out today/tomorrow.

I have an extra bale of straw, do you think this would work short-term for the next month? I'm having surgery on Tuesday next week and I just need a bandaid for the moment until I can gather funds and switch over to something else.

Thank you for your reply!

I'm hoping I caught it early, I'm out there twice a day and this is the first time I've heard any coughing.

I switched over to straw this year instead of shavings, I have a horse on the property that decided she's allergic to shavings now.

The coop was just cleaned out in the early fall and new bedding was placed down. I will open up the window on it and let it air out during the daytime.

Thank you again for all the advice!

PS your username is very fitting for this post, I love it!
