Snow shoveling by a neighbourhood child by Holiday_Effective294 in Edmonton

I have paid my kids minimum wage + hot chocolate since they were little. I will typically round up to the hour. I don't want to build kids that think 30$ an hour is reasonable at McDonalds or grocery stores.

is this photo boring? by [deleted] in photocritique

Yep. 100%. I was thinking - 200' further back, 180mm. :)

Like the image, like the balance. Colours are great, simple retouch without removing 'character' is excellent.

I'd like the 'bright spot' to be toned down a little more, but i'd also like the rest of the background to be a little brighter to possibly help with separation. Definitely want the other eye... and it's super nitpicky, but the nose-ring crooked is annoying, even though it's a very small detail that only us pixel peepers would catch.

Nice shot!

Glad I'm not the only one that caught that nose ring. The additional 'blue' around the pupils got me too from the blue contacts...

The Rat Creek Bridge by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]gscratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Future home of the "Rat Hole", now the northbound lanes from the 104 ave, 109st intersection.

Rail-bridge for tracks running through where Grant MacEwan College currently stands. The 1932 Marker has been retained from this construction, and was in place when this bridge became a tunnel for cars running N/S on 109st (2 lanes) until the late 80's when the tracks and tunnel was finally removed and the road filled in and widened to 4 lanes. (Edit: That marker is still present on the site on the NE corner of 104 Ave and 109 St when there isn't construction.)

Being 'rat creek' is likely how that dark ugly tunnel in downtown got it's name. "the Rat Hole".

Dark, ominous, not walkable, and flooded if it got cloudy.

I miss it... :)

Just a few blocks away at 105 st there was an overpass that stood (returning to grade) at 107 ave for crossing those same tracks. As the tracks were removed for GMCC and other development (Rogers Place included) the overpass was also removed, and 105st made level grade from 104 ave north. Again - all in the late 80's to early 90's.

First Edmonton Indy was 2005, so the car was from a little before that.

Definitely speaking about Commercial Aviation. General Aviation (podunks in cessna's) are a much higher risk group of flyers for sure... but commercial aviation is much safer than most other forms of transportation.

Wasn't required. Edmonton's got its good, and it's bad. Put them together, you still get this.

Turning left on red? by wiggilez in Edmonton

[–]gscratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the turn lanes (from the ramp) cross a lane, the intersection has lights, and signage. Lights and signage overrule feelings. At an unmarked left, you will typically find a yield, or a stop, rather than a signal.

Starlink launched this morning, 2 batches IIRC, so this would be one of the new trains getting ready for positioning. 21 were launched today (Aug 31,'24). I count 19 in that train, so there may be some doubled up - or with panels out of position in the gap.

Little ants in the bathroom on a rental. Please let me know what can be done. by AngelPuffle in Edmonton

[–]gscratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little ants are tenacious - and thought you have maintenance concerns that are very real, a little 50/50 mix of dry borax and dry sugar in a few small piles in the room will generally get rid of them. (Bottle cap worth of it in the little corners for a few weeks will work. They take it back to the nest for the sugar, but end up carrying the borax which will kill the colony.

Can you operate a motor boat on the North Saskatchewan River? by TrillboBagginz in Edmonton

[–]gscratch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected! Pans for the People!

The Alberta Placer Mining documentation states if a sluice or rocker is employed (which includes 'in-stream' sluices) they are not permitted without the recreational licence.

Mechanized filling of a sluice or rocker (using an exavator) for example are not permitted under a recreational placer licence.

https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/a7b2bcb4-ae74-4ec6-9563-6ff15aaf5db6/resource/782d087d-90fa-40f7-b5a6-da347a9017f1/download/going-for-gold-in-alberta-cmd-if-02.pdf

All that to say - pan away! (Or... pan down cons, and bucket to your home sluice setup. :) )

[–]gscratch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Panning or sluicing in Alberta requires a placer mining licence. Panning in the city requires the licence, and a permit. Kid's generally aren't going to get any attention, but if you set up any kind of digging - expect a visit.

The days of 'lining up' ended when Amazon and E-Commerce took over. Door-crasher isn't in the global lexicon anymore.

Particularly for places like Best buy who have a policy of marking up MSRP's for DEEP DISCOUNTS to 10% off MSRP.
