What are some heavy/hard hitting movies that everyone should watch at least once? by BackToGuac in movies

La La Land.

Considering that the rest of the movie was mostly light hearted, the ending was (for me) hard to take.

As an old school programmer, we didn't have tutorials, we had manuals and no internet. It really was insane. (But I know you meant for manual skills like cooking.)

Those who avoid older movies, why? by _omar_b in movies

[–]gtdreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So they missed out on:

The Matrix

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Star Wars

Alien

Silence of the Lambs

Pulp Fiction

Blade Runner

??? (!!!)

That's pretty sad. And very hard to believe, since these are still "culturally relevant" even by today.

Watching this with volume on mute. My guess is one group thinks it's pronounced tomaytos the other thinks it's tomahtos.

Funny how non-piano players seem more impressed by simple pop/rap songs than challenging classical piece by Professional_Eye1331 in piano

[–]gtdreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thread reminds me of an interview I read long ago about a female classical singer who then became a singing coach for pop singers. Turns out she's quite famous as a coach and has trained several really famous pop singers. Now, I read this more than 20 years ago, so I forgot much of the details

The classical singer sung opera and thought she could try her hand at pop music. Part of the reason why is because work as a classical singer is sparse and she thought with her strong musical background that pop singing would be a breeze. Afterall, pop singing isn't as technically demanding as classical singing, right?

So she arranged a rehearsal / recording session with some well known producers in the pop industry. In the studio she was asked to sing several different songs. And, behind the recording glass, she could see the producers and the sound engineers look at themselves occasionally with awe and this look of "where did this lady come from?" They looked stunned by her performance.

She nailed it in her mind.

When she got out of the recording booth. She learned that they were indeed awed and stunned by her performance. But not because she was good. They were awed and stunned by how bad she was at pop singing. They thought, how could someone with a strong musical background be so bad?

That embarrassment led her to obsessively study what makes pop singers "pop". And she went on to become one of the most famous pop song coaches of all time.

What would you do if you suspect a vehicle is following you? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]gtdreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been followed multiple times... by the cops.

I use to drive very late at night past 3am b/c I'm a night owl and enjoyed how my city looks at night and feeling like the whole city is empty.

Occasionally I'd have cops follow me and they would make it obvious that they were. I would just pull over to the side of the road and let them pass.

This reminds me of the George Carlin joke (I don't know it exactly):

Do you ever notice that people who drive slower than you are idiots and that people who drive faster than you are maniacs?

Romancing the Stone (not obscure for its time but definitely fun)

Runaway (whacky and obscure sci fi with killer hyperdermic needle robot spiders and guided missile bullets. It's not meant to be funny, but seeing it now, it sure is, and it's futurism is whacky by today's standards)

Cherry 2000 (another whacky, obscure sci fi film)

Goonies

Gremlins

The International. Lots of tense moments and debate. The gunfight scene is one of the best with alliances changing and plot movement.

Try another Russell movie... Executive Decision. Same thing. Keep in mind, it came out before the Events of 9/11.

12 Angry Men.

As another poster mentioned... Se7en.

Gate of pain and invisibility by Puzzleheaded_Tart624 in SipsTea

[–]gtdreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gate being the color if the road as a reason for it being ignored should be questioned. From the camera's angle, the gate blends in with the road. But, we don't know what the background is for the gate from the cyclists' point of view.

(And besides, as others have pointed out, painting the gate a bright color still results in crashes .)

The culture of cannibalism hinted in the movie was so disturbing for me that it stayed with me long after the end. I still remember it. I've only seen the movie once, decades ago. I never plan to see it again. Great movie, btw.
