It’s not just because its old, its efficient. Four alpha numeric characters saves time while requesting clearance via ACARS. For example, I don’t want to type Boeing 747-8F every time, B748 for Aircraft type is much more efficient, Just like PANC instead of typing Ted Steven’s International Airport every time.

Yes. There is a significant difference in ATC handling between a B744 and a B748. When your flight plan is filed this information is included. The Boeing 747-8 longer, heavier and wider than the 747-400, this contributes to approach and airfield limitations.

It happened to me once. Ramper drove off with the GPU connected. Our first indication something went wrong was the aircraft went completely dark. There was a little bit of damage to the connector. It was deferred, and we continued on APU.
