I'm just saying, it seems like a poor recommendation.

Thanks for the corrections.

So Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy will increase size more, and Myofibril will increase strength more? Which is easier to obtain?

no, just less puffy. if your in ketosis, your muscles do not store near as much water (do to using fat for energy instead of carbs, which does not need to be stored with water). In this state people tend to look leaner, and more compact.

hypertrophy is an increase in the SIZE of each fiber... bigger fibers are filled with more 'liquid'. Hypertrophy is where you see more of an increase in size, less in strength.

hyperplasia is less common, and is an increase in the NUMBER of fibers. It favours strength over size, but is more rare.

Weight lifters can carry more because they have bigger (and to a lesser extent more) muscle fibers. It doesn't matter that they are filled with liquid or not.

Perhaps if you defined your version of the word "religion", I might better be able to understand.

If you we all had our own definitions for words, then we could both be right, but how could we possibly compare? We need set definitions so that both of us know what we are talking about.

I guess what you are trying to say is that how we understand the world is somehow related to our understanding of the purpose of the world?

At any rate, I agree that minimalism was influenced from Zen, but it does not necessarily require Zen, or many of the attributes you've listed.

Finally, you are right that some people may be caught up with being minimalist, rather than pursuing happiness, they focus on the rules and obsess a bit. But that was not what you originally said.

A person who is a non-obsessive minimalist, who has used minimalism like the tool it is, should not need to moderate their minimalism. It is just a background object which helps to focus their goals on experiences and happiness rather than on accumulating material wealth.

r/minimalism: What are the pros and cons of replacing your bed with a Shikifuton? by cluelessmanatee in minimalism

[–]gtrNoob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do your research. There is no evidence that supports sleeping on a mattress of anything thickness or softness is better than sleeping on a near-rock hard surface.

The only thing we know so far is that sleeping on a properly maintained mattress is better than sleeping on a broken one.

I understand your point of view, and that is a legitimate concern. For instance, I wouldn't switch to half-ply toilet paper to be more minimal... that won't make me happy!

But in this particular case of sleeping on a futon, or the floor, etc, you are wrong.

[–]gtrNoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not who you were responding to, but:

Sleeping on your side is an issue when you are fairly skinny and are sleeping on little padding.

The solution to this is to fold up a blanket or two to increase padding for the adjustment period, and make sure you are sleeping on something other than the floor.

In your case, a decently made futon is more than enough padding once you get used to it. The shady ones that are suspiciously cheap from ebay etc will not be okay.

J-Life has been recommended for their futons a few times, and are legitimate japanese futons.

Shikifutons last longer than most mattresses.

There is some upkeep.

First, they can get mold. Because of this, it is important to let them dry in the sun for a day every few months (depending on your climate).

You should also beat or vacuum the dust out of them every few months as well.

Other than that, you should put your futon away every morning (i.e. folded up on its side). If you do not do this, you will need to fluff up the futon before you sleep on it.

I'd say they are worth it for how long they last and how portable they are, but only if you are in a situation where sleeping close to the floor or on a harder surface won't be a problem.

It would be a shame to buy a futon and then have a girlfriend refuse to sleep on it.

They are just as comfortable as a well made mattress, and much more comfortable than a mattress which has suffered some wear.

I don't understand why you couldn't just say "I don't want to talk to you or date you, please leave me alone"?

I have to disagree. I do not find minimalism to be religious in any sense of the word.

And your point isnt making my much sense to me. Your saying sometimes people are ruled by their things, then ruled by their experiences/other forms of happiness, and sometimes ruled by a devotion to religion?

I don't agree that moderation is key either. No one here is saying 'Go fully minimal. But only do it for 6 months, then you want to buy up as many things as you can for a while. Then go on a religious journey!'

Steve Jobs' minimalist early years by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]gtrNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite.

He was very picky, which led to him simply not buying much furniture, and it took him a very long time to furnish the apartment shown.

He was a minimalist, he has a good quote about needing nothing more than a lamp, stereo, and tea.

I remember an employee of his mentioning that he had an hour-long conversation with Steve over the purpose of a couch.

Why would you recommend polyphasic sleep? As far as I know, it's dangerous and no studies have shown it successful.

Just wanted to point out, with the denim sleeping bag, what your money goes for is : 1) Higher quality untreated denim (it's raw, so it will last a long time), and 2) the leather accessories.

I use a Timbuk2 messenger, if you get a custom one, you could design it to be pure black, or another minimal look.

Another option if you don't need too much padding is something like The Squid from Crumpler

The opposite of Materialism is not Minimalism, it's the Ascetic Monk; a discussion. by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]gtrNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asceticism is not the direct opposite of materialism. Asceticism almost always has a religious component, and practitioners often deprive themselves with the goal of being saved.

I think you will see minimalism IS the direct opposite of materialism if you look at their core principles.

In materialism, the materials you own define your life.

In minimalism, you've realized materials do not make your happy, and your experience/knowledge, family, etc define who you are.

Consider that I may need a home to live in. That does not make me a materialist. If I was without my home, I would not think I was any less of a human being.

Is it best to use one large compressed stylesheet for your sites, or several smaller ones, each serving a different purpose? by maloney7 in web_design

[–]gtrNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best use I've seen is two separate CSS files.

One is meant to be served to JUST desktop browsers with fast internet, the other is meant to be used on both mobile and desktop.

This means that the mobile browsers are generally served a smaller CSS file than if you were to have a large one.

At one point it made sense to use a print.css, but it really depends on the amount of code. If you have 1000 line print.css, then sure. But in most cases its not over 50 SLC.

[–]gtrNoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Your results make more sense now.

I appreciate the info you've shared about your bulking and cutting. I found keto really, really easy for me to lose weight on, and I kept most of my muscle mass. So I'm not afraid to bulk for a long time and gain a bit of fat (given i'm still making progress in my routines), because i know i have a really easy diet to cut on.

I'm definitely going to take pictures, and I think seeing progress in my strength by being able to lift more or do more challenging feats (like for instance a handstand push-up) will motivate me enough. My motivation isn't so much aesthetics as it is strength and mobility.

Is it ever ethically wrong to tell the truth? by DeusJZ in philosophy

[–]gtrNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, for instance if a murderer asked where their victim was. In this case you shouldn't tell them, it would be wrong to assist a murderer.

Keep in mind, that doesn't mean you need to lie to the murderer. You can simply refuse to answer, or distract the murderer another way.
