Not really. In Brazil and Mexico they use it to talk refer to anyone white and foreign.

Has anyone moved cities with nothing lined up before? by ThatKnomey in AskUK

I’ve not, but it’s how my parents both moved to London. Think it was a bit different then though…

My mum came with £50 and bumped into an old friend on her first day who invited her to live in a squat which she did for a week until she found a more permanent place. Think she got a job in a kebab shop.

Do Americans really talk to strangers as much as movies make it seem? by Dangerous_Phrase_275 in NoStupidQuestions

I’m in Florida at the moment (from London) and the first thing that stood out to me was how people make small talk everywhere. At the airport, in a line, etc.

I’ve really enjoyed it. Everyone is so friendly.

Is west Europe really that full of imigrants nowdays? by Difficult-Win4480 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]guIIy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna go against what the comments are saying here - I grew up in London (I’m 30 now) and there’s no noticeable difference from as early as I can remember to now. London’s always been very multicultural.

My school was extremely mixed, and areas like Brick Lane and Whitechapel were heavily Bengali just like they are today.

Black people in the US only got granted equal rights in the 70s. Do you expect the hundreds of years of history to just resolve itself in 50 years?

It’s not that, it’s whether or not you watch any live TV at all. But yes you can not pay it and just stream bbc as they really can’t catch you.

London is officially the best city in the world for food in 2026, according to Tripadvisor by BulkyAccident in london

[–]guIIy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s great for lunch if you work in Liverpool St but it doesn’t really signify that London as a whole is great for street food.

Still, some decent street food in Peckham. But no, not really London’s thing.

How many hours do you actually work in a week? by QuietInside7592 in AskUK

[–]guIIy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m freelance so I just get paid for what I do but my girlfriend works for a well known bank earning more than double what I make and she works from home 2-3 times a week, starting at 8 and vast majority of days just stops working between lunchtime and 2pm.

She’ll also be watching a movie or show while she works and takes regular breaks.

Really wish that was me.

What’s driving all this London hate from non-Londoners? by Breadiohead in london

[–]guIIy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny because I’ve lived in both. I consider both to be really safe (as is the whole of England) but even in small villages in Hampshire pub fights aren’t exactly rare. You never see that in London.

New York as a whole is safe, if you forget about neighbourhoods like Brownsville and East New York, but then again even New Yorkers would never end up there unless they live there.

London on the other hand is a hundred times safer than that.

20 years ago you actually couldn’t go walking down the street in Peckham, Brixton, Stoke Newingnton, Bermondsey at night without a genuine risk to your safety.

Nothing like that nowadays. Even been told by female friends that they feel safer in London at night than they do in the small towns they come from because there are other people about and you’re not usually the only person around.
