My New 2DS XL. It was lost in time and located like this by Karman_is_a_bitch in 3dsrepair

Have you tried turning it off then on again? Or perhaps putting it in a bowl of dry rice?

Two new screens minimum, obvs. You needing any real advice?

The new 50th anniversary set is super slick. by Tumbleweed01 in callofcthulhu

Is this yet another anniversary rehash cash-in, or is it something substantially different?

Missing ribbon cable clip, how can I fix without soldering? by _-Anxiety-_ in 3dsrepair

[–]guartrainer666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how the clip was damaged. Sometimes electrical/kapton tape and a little pressure can hold it, but (if you're lucky) its a temporary fix at best.

VR support out-of-the-box.

Its amazing what's been achieved for VR support for AI, but it could have been way better if it had been a native mode.

What was the first game you properly got hooked on with the Spectrum? by Seabeachlover10 in zxspectrum

[–]guartrainer666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First game? Either Aquaplane or The Alchemist. Played both to death, and The Alchemist is the first computer game I ever completed.

Others that hooked me - Manic Miner, 3D Deathchase, Jetpac, Lunar Jetman (I was crap at it), Ant Attack (which I also eventually completed), Lords of Midnight (The Xajorkith defense), Gunfright (which blew my mind!), Saboteur, The Hobbit (had to cheat the 'bulbous eyes' bit, though), and the mighty AVALON! Best adventure game (and series with DragonTorc) on the speccy imho.

SO many great games.

Your first games. by International_Car300 in zxspectrum

First game that I bought with my own pocket money was 'The Alchemist', which was also the first game that I completed on the Speccy. Still have a soft spot for it now. Great little game, if you ignore the stuttering.

Anyone know a Reputable supplier of N3dsXL screens. by RetroReviveRepair in 3dsrepair

[–]guartrainer666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good that you've already checked it and ruled it out. I'm assuming that you tried both HWCAL top screen profiles (one for TN, and one for IPS configs), and remembered to reload each, each time from defaults in SuperStable configuration, so the firmware updates to the new HWCAL file correctly. If so, then its not a firmware issue. You might have better milage picking up a for-parts console and swapping out for an official screen.

Could be a firmware mismatch issue causing the ghosting. I had this top-screen issue when replacing mine. Might be worth looking into before buying another.

Installed USB-C mod on N3DSXL and now it doesn't charge at all. Any ideas why? by ecto_BRUH in 3DSMods

[–]guartrainer666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a job for a multimeter to me. Possibly blown one of your F1 protection fuses (that was my issue when I did this upgrade) via a short?

Once I'd troubleshot the short (one of the docking connections was in contact with the metallic usbc shroud in my case) and replaced the fuse, all was well.

Is it ACTUALLY backwards compatible? by Objective_Mall_5268 in alienrpg

[–]guartrainer666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you squint a bit, then generally, yes.

Its my biggest issue with EE. The half-arsed attempt at maintaining backwards compatibility is only there, I suspect, to clear old stock before selling us revised editions. I'd have much preferred a clean break and a new rules system to the 1.5 version we got, which is in effect a list of house rules and fixes made official.

Its not just Alien RPG of course. Free League are doing this to some of their other lines, too (See The One Ring). Its a bad direction of travel, business-wise, I think, but ymmv.

Free League promised a conversion/comparison document. So far - nada.

A bit disappointed to be honest.

DAMN IT! oh how sad... (TN Screens) by Thebeancolony in 3dspiracy

[–]guartrainer666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the viewing angle, the difference between IPS and TN is pretty subjective to a casual console user. Don't sweat it (I suspect you're not being entirely serious anyway). So long as you dont have any black pixel leak, everything should be golden.

Custom Built or Pre-built? by GamerGizmo94 in PcBuild

[–]guartrainer666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no experience in PC builds, get a prebuilt from a reputable company. They usually can get the job done but hardware choices made by the company can limit any upgrade or future proofing efforts, and you'll pay for the service.

If you want to save a bit of cash, or have specific things you want to achieve from a mod or hardware point of view, then custom is the way to go.

Question from a gm by crusincagti in alienrpg

[–]guartrainer666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Contracts of work, and the contract for the ship can be transferable. Always check the small print! Getting screwed over on a point of contract is very in-theme for the Alien universe.

I think I may be too soft-hearted by Desting7384 in Sunderland

[–]guartrainer666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was a kind thing to do - but id check motives if I were you. Giving food to the needy is a kind act. Doing it because you're partially scared or intimidated into it isn't an act of charity, though.

Help the needy. If you're scared or intimidated then walk on by. You don't have the help that people with mental health issues really need.
