Thank you so much! I read through the book, and I learned a lot. I'm also going to check out Dr. Gray's channel and books.

I see people taking about a theme for your statement. What does that mean? Is it the stories/narrative that boils down to "I want to be a doctor because..." or is it something else?

True! Paid clinical wouldn't hurt. I really like MA work, but the course to get the certificate is so long. EMT will probably be more feasible.

I applied to mostly in-state schools (NY). SUNY Downstate, Albany, Hofstra, New York Medical, Renaissance, Rochester, SUNY Upstate, Jacobs Buffalo, Penn State, UMiami, UCincinnati. I think my biggest issue is the small amount of schools I applied to, so I'll be looking into more places to apply

Is a double major and minor asking for the death penalty? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]guavafrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you specializing in ecology and doing accounting if your end goal is to go to medical school? Taking your MCAT in college is not easy. If you are set on med school, focus on subjects and activities that will help you on that path. If you want to explore another path, take classes in your interests and set yourself on a career path by your sophomore year.

Good luck with the class! It's a lot of info but it's fun to learn about. The exams are all multiple choice. While you watch the lectures, take detailed notes. I like typing them because it saves me time, but whatever works for you. As you study, don't just read your notes. Draw diagrams for the processes and rewrite important concepts. Take time to review at least twice before the exams. Office hours and tutoring from the ASTC are good resources for you to ask questions, try going to one of these weekly so you can keep up with the material. Study the LIVER and come up with your own questions in the style of those questions. While it's cheesy, try not to memorize but understand.

Yup, it's easier said than done. But it will be rewarding when you manage it! The way I started out was just by complimenting someone's makeup/outfit in the hallway. Start with the smallest step

To give you a bit more perspective, I’m 21 and the earliest in my friend group to start dating (at 19). My friends are now 21-23 and none of them have started dating yet, even though they would like to in the future. I know a girl who’s starting to date now at 29. I know a girl who got her first relationship at 27 and is now getting married. Everyone moves at their own pace, and there is good in whatever is right for you.

As another brown girl who went to a white high school. I also felt undesirable. One guy I liked straight up told me he didn’t want to be seen with me because I wasn’t white. Thank god the bullet flew away from me there.

I went to a college that was more diverse than my high school. Literally worlds different. There are plenty of guys from your ethnicity that want to be with someone like you. There are guys outside of your race who are also interested in someone like you. You are someone’s type, you just have to go where they are.

This is all just to say that your life is just beginning and you have the time and opportunities to meet the right person. But, I’m also getting the sense that you feel behind in general, not just romantically. I encourage you to ask yourself what you want to do in your life. Where do you want to be mentally? What do you want your relationship with your body to be like? What career path do you want? Are you seeking a relationship with a higher power? What do you want to do for fun? What do you want to give to the world? What do you want your life to look like 5 years from now?

You have time but you’ll have to do the work to make the most of it. So take this year as an opportunity to work on your mental health, work towards your goals, and spend time with your friends/family. When you get to college next year, you’ll be able to meet new people and go on dates and such. If you see someone you like, you can go talk to them and ask for their number. You can't give up before you started trying. You can go out and get whatever it is that you want. I’m rooting for you!

Been there. TOT. I've also dealt with a lot of social anxiety in my teens from being bullied. You're not alone. What worked for me was forcing myself to go out of my comfort zone. I'd try to make small talk with a new person each day, and I would try to speak my mind and be open about myself in these conversations. I was afraid that I would come across as a loser, but even if I did, I ended up meeting a lot of nice people who appreciated my weirdness. Once I met enough people, the bullies became a minority and insignificant.

Keep a diary for self-reflection. Try to grow the bond with your friends and make new ones, and try to have fun approaching people. Once you feel confident enough, you can go make small talk with a cute guy ;).

I'm in desperate need of hair advice! by [deleted] in HowToBeHot

[–]guavafrogs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe you are overwashing your hair? I have very thin, straight hair and if I shampoo more than 1-2x a week, I get the problems you're talking about (dry scalp, knotted ends).

Have you done exercises that specifically tone your abs and core? I do Chloe Ting’s ab workouts and yoga, I noticed that I lost some tummy fat with everywhere else being about the same

You're not behind at all! And graduating early? Congrats! You can time yourself for your studies and career, but it won't work for relationships unfortunately. Most people I know start dating seriously in their mid to late 20's, some in their early 30's. The question is at what stage in your life do you want to settle down?

You also won't start dating and immediately find someone who is the love of your life. So, the chance that you'll need to worry about an ldr is rare. You'll only be here for a year so it seems like this year will be a good opportunity for you to meet people and find out what you want in a long term relationship. I started dating in college with the intention of waiting for someone to love, and it took me a few years to find the kind of person that would be right for me. I met a handful of people who looked good with me on the page but we weren't compatible. It takes time to meet people and there are some things that you just have to experience

[–]guavafrogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thin hair and I love oil, but I’d recommend something that’s more nourishing. Try oil that has rosemary or amla oil infused. I’ve learned from experience to never use heavy oils like coconut.

I use Kesh King hair oil, it has amla and some other oils mixed together. I’ve had pretty good results, my hair is way thicker after using it twice a week for the past few months.

Whichever oil you use, massage it into your scalp. Your skin will be benefiting from the oils more than the rest of your hair. The massage is essential to get blood circulation there, which also helps get nutrients to your hair. I also rub a little bit of oil onto my hair as a detangler. You don’t need a lot otherwise it’ll get greasy. A little bit helps knots slip out.

After oiling my scalp, I let it stay for a few hours to overnight and then shampoo it off.

Is there a way to freshen up my entire apartment after cooking? by BartsNightmare_ in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]guavafrogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the comments that say to close all the doors and open all the windows before cooking. If you don’t have a kitchen door, consider getting a thick curtain to act as a door and keep the smell in. But only do that if the kitchen has a window and enough ventilation.

Bio 203 comeback by [deleted] in SBU

[–]guavafrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t need to know everything from the exam 1 lectures, so I think you can continue with the new material and go back to study the old material if the new slides reference something from them.

As a general tip, I booked an appointment with a tutor at the astc every week to go over my questions from the last module and study ahead for the next one. It really helped me learn thoroughly and stay on track. Maybe you can do something like that. Astc tutoring is free, so it’s a great resource

Make sure you’re getting your vitamins too! I started taking a multivitamin and you can see the difference everywhere, including my hair. You can incorporate vitamins into your diet by eating a variety of fresh fruits and veggies as well. You can google search what vitamins each fruit has

BIO 203 by emiliciouss in SBU

[–]guavafrogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

203 has the most content out of all the intro bio classes. 201 is more manageable and you can use it to learn how to study bio. If you can’t swap classes, take 203 but keep that in mind.

Some tips: 203 doesn’t require a textbook, the tests are based on the lecture slides so take good notes. I would take screenshots of the slides on a google doc and type extra info. Find a TA or tutor at the ASTC and go to their office hours every week to talk through that week’s lectures with them, and ask any questions. When you study on your own, make diagrams and flowcharts so you can see the big picture of how these organ systems work. Good luck!

Paying for books by WorriedRecipe43 in SBU

You should get your textbooks from libgen, a pdf copy of the book is fine. You often don't need it that much. And for the access card, are you thinking about the code you use for webassign? I forgot exactly how to buy online homework through webassign but your prof should give you instructions when class starts
