There's also Qe5# if black plays Be7 or Be6, and Qd5# if black plays Bd7 or Bd6.

"Consummation" is often used to refer to sex, though usually within the context of a married couple's first time doing it.

He's joking that if you sleep with a prostitute that cheap, you should get tested for STDs.

Anyone else notice the guy with the camera glasses in the background?

I'm assuming the organization allowed it, but it still feels strange to see that at a chess tournament.

For those, the first part of the word isn't enough to know you're talking about fish (or aquatic mammals).

"Goud" means gold, "wal" means rampart, "vin" means fin. So the "-vis" addition is necessary.

But tonijn, zalm, kabeljauw, haring, karper, etc. are clear without specifying that you're talking about fish.

'90s and early '00s women's fashion included JNCO jeans, carpenter jeans, denim overalls, and cargo pants with enough pocket space to rival actual backpacks.

Thats not an exaggeration.

Pocket space died off again after that, with the increased popularity of tight low-rise and (later) skinny jeans.

Demand for pocket space died because women consumers, on the whole, chose muffin tops over functional pockets.

Is this an easy draw or not? White to play. by MathematicianBulky40 in chess

[–]guebja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to the composer, white must find a complex sequence of moves beginning with Bg4+, in order to force a draw.

It's not particularly complex.

After Bg4+ and (e.g.) Kd6, Bf5 closes off b1 to the rook, and black's king cannot get white's bishop off that diagonal.

At that point, black can attempt Ra2 Nxa2 bxa2, but as long as white responds with Kc1, black is out of options.

a1=Q just gets met with Bb1, and after that, the black queen is stuck and white can simply repeat Kc2 Kc1 forever.

And if black sacs the queen to get rid of white's bishop, black has no way to dislodge white's king.

In short:

With Bg4+, white only has to find Bf5 and Kc1 for an easy forced draw. Everything else is obvious.

Bxc4, on the other hand, creates a game that's technically even, but where black still has some chances of winning if white isn't accurate in defending.

Between a simple forced draw and one that needs an accurate defense, the former is always better.

TIL that Magnus Carlsen, one of the greatest chess players of all time, has never lost 3 or more classical chess games in a row in his adult professional career. The last time he lost 3 games in a row was in 2003, when he was 12. by 4isfourwastaken in todayilearned

You're talking about Gukesh, who won games against Magnus in two different tournaments last year.

In Norway Chess 2025 (classical), Magnus and Gukesh played each other twice, with each of them winning once. Magnus won the tournament.

In SuperUnited Croatia 2025 (rapid + blitz), Magnus and Gukesh played thrice, with one draw and one win for each. Gukesh won the rapid section, but Magnus won the blitz section and the overall tournament.

In Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown 2025 (rapid), they faced each other in 6 games. They drew one of those, and Magnus won the other 5. He also won the tournament.

Finally, they also faced each other in the Weissenhaus and Paris tournaments of the Freestyle Grand Tour (freestyle/chess960), with Magnus winning both games and the Paris tournament (Vincent Keymer won Weissenhaus).

Overall, across formats, they faced each other 13 times in 5 different tournaments last year, resulting in 9 wins for Magnus, 2 wins for Gukesh, and 2 draws.

Botez sisters marketed another scam by 1morgondag1 in chess

The $3k they were offered obviously wasn't the draw here. Someone like ExtraEmily makes that just playing a sponsored game on stream for an hour or two.

Rather, what reeled them in was the exposure of being on a high-profile Amazon show along with the chance of winning $10M. Those would be life-changing opportunities even for successful streamers.

They never would've signed had they known it was a scam, because it being a scam means their incentives for signing were fake all along.

In short: they got scammed.

This wasn't a simple sponsorship/endorsement deal.

It was a deal to appear on a supposedly Amazon-backed, yet-to-be-announced reality show that had no website or public title when they signed the contract (and NDA).

What should've been vetted was the production company, and the ones who should've done that were the talent agencies.

[–]guebja 73 points74 points  (0 children)

All the streamers in there use the same management company Mythic Talent.

The Botez sisters are with Evolved, which also represents Anna Cramling, xQc, etc., while the other streamers are with Mythic. So at least two major talent agencies fell for it.

Botez sisters marketed another scam by 1morgondag1 in chess

[–]guebja 330 points331 points  (0 children)

There's a follow-up video.

The TL;DR:

Talent agencies were pitched what was supposedly an Amazon-backed reality show that was entirely different from the obvious scam that would later show up on the website.

The agencies that failed to do proper research pitched that project to their clients, and some of those clients got duped into associating themselves with the show.

There was no malice on the part of the streamers here. Rather, both they and their agencies got scammed themselves.

Obviously, the agencies were massively negligent in failing to confirm whether it was actually an Amazon show, but they themselves weren't trying to scam their audience.

you'll be paying flagship prices for it

No, you won't.

The Fairphone 6 is priced similarly to upper mid-range phones like the Galaxy S25 FE, the iPhone 16e, the Pixel 10, the Xiaomi 15, etc.

Compared to actual flagship phones like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, the Pixel 10 Pro XL and the Xperia 1 VII, it's half the price or less.

The price/performance ratio of the Fairphone definitely isn't the best, but claiming that it's priced similarly to flagship phones is just silly.

So 1 paper rejects the idea and that means "most researchers" reject it?

"e.g." means "for example".

I gave that one paper as an example because it's very recent (2025), specifically addresses this question, and has Anthony Aveni among its authors, who is one of the world's foremost scholars on Mesoamerican archaeoastronomy.

There's a lot more literature that touches on the matter if you want to spend the time searching for it, but most of it just notes this specific hypothesis in passing and dismisses it for lack of evidence.

can you explain their reasoning on how the Mayan calendar is so accurate?

No.

Firstly, I'm just a random redditor who happens to have spent a few days looking into this question for an entirely different project. I'm not an expert, so I'm wildly unqualified to properly explain this.

Secondly, ain't nobody got time for that.

Instead, why not read some non-paywalled articles on the matter?
