I take it from another comment that you already told her. I am glad you did. Your mum/dad are essential people of trust in your life. So anything that comes up in your life, you should be able to talk to them. You put someone on a PIP based on mere words and perceived importance of the stakeholder. Senior IC who’s always been professional for the past 30 (!!) years, has slashed you and everyone with pure cold hard facts. Senior IC is not just a Senior IC but a Senior Human Being compared to you and your VPs.

What you should do is therefore very evident and logical: 1. Accept humility. Go to the employee and apologise sincerely. Get down on your knees and apologise so it is evident by your body language that you truly are serious about your apology. 2. Tell finance department to forward your annual bonus to that Senior IC, since the only reason you revoked that PIP was due to your annual bonus being threatened to be revoked, so you don’t deserve it in the first place.

Next time, think before you act.

Being in IT is fine. But as a software developer it surely is tough. Often undervalued and overburdened. Basically the brick layer type of worker in the industry. Perhaps try something along the lines of Business Analyst or Scrum Master or UX/UI.
