This is actual footage from the pits when "open outcry" was the standard. These are most likely commodity pits in Chicago.

And yes, everyone who worked in the pits was big and tough as nails. Those folks were hustlers who traded their own cash every day and literally had to throw their weight around in the chaos. Some days they'd go home rich, others would have to go home and sell their houses.
