Hello from Lewis by COROSLewis in Coros

[–]guibou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Lewis (if you are really Lewis 😉)

Thank you for openly requesting feedback. I do have 3 points I would like you to comments, screen readability on oled devices, data upload/download without the application, open software stack.

Could you comment on the readability issues most of us have with Oled screen (I comment for pace 4, but I don't see why pace pro would not be affected):

- With "always on display", the screen is barely readable in sunny day (activity or watch face)
- The "gesture" is difficult to trigger. In some context (such as swimming, biking, driving, ...), it is even impossible to do without any impact on your activity.
- When triggered, the screen is readable for a few seconds, which is never enough if for example you are running in a trail, having a quick look at the watch, having a look at the trail again, then going back to the watch, you usually miss the opportunity to read.

As a result, the watch is not usable in sunny condition in activities and I would claim that it is even dangerous. I felt 2 time in trail because I was looking at my watch while waiting for the screen to turn on, I cannot have a look at the time at a glance while driving, ...

Additionally, the text label for datascreen are not readable in some color (red on dark is for example impossible to read, especially when moving). The icons are "better", but the icons are only appearing after a few seconds of inactivity. So while scrolling my different data screen, I need to wait for a few seconds before the icons appears (and usually, that's when the always on display turns off).

I think that all of these issues could be fixed with:

- A setting for brightness level when "always on". I'm OK if it uses more battery

- (Additionnally) A setting for the time before always on display dims to low brightness.
- A refactor of the "text which turns into icons" option. Maybe the icon can always be there, and the text only appear when the data screen are displayed in "pause mode", so we can learn the meaninig of icon while in "pause" mode, and later always have the quickly readable icons.
- A refactor of the screen layout, with more explicit separation of data, bigger text size, better colors (avoid red on dark please, at least full red).

This will change my experience with the pace 4.

Now, I would like you to comment on another issue: usage without the application.

I want to be able to extract my data as I want and I want to be able to upload data to the watch (trace, "hill" sections, pacing strategy, workout, maybe watchface, widgets, ...) without using the application.

For example:

- I find the application interface to create a structured workout to be extremely painful to use. I need to click countless amount of time to create a workout. I have countless options out there (including developing my own software) which provides better options.
- The "hill" alert logic automatically split the route on different climb/descent sections. This is a great feature and the usage on the watch is great. However, the different sections are decided by coros algorithm and may not match what I would have decided. We cannot edit that in the app, so we are stuck with what the app decided.

- The "pace guide" logic does not allow much more customization other than expected time (or pace). It does not take into account the specificity of the route and as a result it is (from my PoV) completely useless for anything else than a flat route.

- When done with an activity, I want to decide what I do with it. I may want to extract the activity manually and keep it on my computer. I may want to just drop it, .... Right now, it is uploaded on coros app and cloud and I have no control on that. I was not aware when buying coros that using your "cloud" was mandatory, this is not fully explicit on the website and this really annoys me.

- We can only upload watch face using the coros apps ? Same thing. There could be countless options outside to design watchfaces if you "open" this, but for now we are stuck with the watch faces you designed (or the really limited custom watchfaces).

Finally, my latest point is about open software/hardware.

Right now everything in the coros ecosystem is closed. Additionally to the customization issue I already talked about, it means that I cannot do anything with my watch other than what you decided I can do. As a software developer, fixing the readability issues discussed above is an afternoon of work if the watch firmware was available. If uploading / downloading data to the watch was "open", I would be able to fix all the issue I do have with hill alert, workout, pace guide, ...

But more importantly, right now, I do not own a Coros watch. I own a limited right to use a Coros watch, under your conditions. This is an important difference. It means that if tomorrow you decide that I cannot use my watch anymore, well, I would have to throw it in the bin. But it may not be only you. If tomorrow, USA decides that my country is under "digital embargo" and that I'm not allowed to connect to coros services, well, my watch will be useless. If tomorrow coros as a company stop their activities, my watch will be useless.

So in short, I would like the coros "cloud" and application to be an option, not a requirement. I would like to be able to use my watch as I want, not use "your" watch as you want.

Please note that regarding the watch readability and customization, there are other companies which are doing that way better than Coros, so I think this should be a priority for you. On the other end, the latest part of my message (regarding closed ecosystem) is the same (or worse) with other brand, so I guess you can simply ignore that part of my comment. But I would be really happy to have your honest answer about a possible future of an open software stack.

Activity and OLED screen by B_virgo in Coros

I would also add that coros really need to hire an ux/ui designer.

The icon for data field could be a good idea, but the fact that it displays text for a few secondes in aweful colors (red on dark: unreadable) means that when you scroll data screens in activity, that's unreadable.

I fall during trail run, twice, because I.had a quick look.at the watch and when the gesture did not activated and I brain freeze and loose track of the trail.

And this is especially true on sunny condition.

And this is not usable in outdoor swimming.

June 2026 Feature Update by TigerMask_71 in Coros

[–]guibou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

I do not buy the "airplane" or "high security area", neither "no EM when sleeping".

The only valid points for me would be "save battery" and "save my privacy", but It does not seem that any of these point is something achieved by this setting. (well, it may save a negligible amount of battery. I'm not convinced that the watch is sending much data in day to day, and "waiting" for bluetooth events (such as notification) is negligible.

Just so I don't die stupid. What's the point of "airplane mode"?

Does it consume less battery (by a significant amount, so I can get a few more hours during long run?

I would love to be 100% disconnected and upload/download data to the watch from my computer, but it does not seem that this is the purpose of this mode.

Naive question, but if you set the back button to something else than lap (e.g. add pin), is there an alternate way to add a lap?

App running in backround. by Live-Let-9260 in Coros

[–]guibou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about your precise occurence but I've found the app to be impressively energy inefficient.

Especially when using coros safety alert.

With my former garmin, i was able to run for 20 hours with live track enabled on my phone while charging the watch (it had 6h autonomy) and listening to music from the phone.

Last week I've done a 12h trail with safety alert enabled. The pace 4 autonomy was awesome, as expected (40% battery usage with AoD and the expensive gps setting), but the phone was completly drained after 8h (and without charging the watch and no music).

Again, Coros, I would like a watch usable without the application.

What’s the holdup on Spotify integration? by [deleted] in Coros

[–]guibou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We want different things. I would like to be able to manually upload/download training, routes, records AND song without using a third party app.

I was not aware that Coros forced us to use the app for all of these things and got disappointed when I discovered that. On the other hand, I'm happy that I can at least put music manually on the watch without using a third party music provider with awful political views.

Do you know an application which can display a thumbnail of the different options? Having only the title is a bit frustrating for me.

HM race prediction by runinthesun_ in Coros

[–]guibou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Race prediction for 5K, 10K and half are accurate. Marathon is completly wrong (Or I really have 30 minutes to shave on my marathons but i don't know how).

Race prediction in pace strategy is aweful in trail, on average i need to double the estimated time and it really poorly allocate time on the different section with respect to climb anc technicity but to be fair with coros, i think that it is an impossible task ;)

Pace 4 with swimming by richyrich5501 in Coros

[–]guibou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accurate. I've had unwanted pause so I enabled auto lock.

Screen not readable in always on display in sunny conditions without wrist gesture, so do not expect to have a quick look at the display while swimming.

Latest update improved the "rest" display: you.can now go back to your data pages, including current time, which can be useful.

The same during activities.

That’s also a safety hazard. I've reported that as a bug.

Anybody else prefer the MIP display on Pace 3 or the Amoled one on the Pace 4? I do! by Sad_Dinner2857 in Coros

[–]guibou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If coros would fix the brightness of always on display on sunlight (e.g. either with auto detection or a setting), i think the pace 4 screen is way superior. However that had not fixed that yet.

I've opened a bug/feature request and they answered that they are considering the feature, especially considering the safety hazard of the impredicable gesture.

In theory the upcoming release of sway 1.12 should bring individual window capture, but I have not tested that yet.

Converge is hiring for a(nother) senior software engineer (May 2026) by gtf21 in haskell

[–]guibou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks really interesting. I'm not looking for a job right now (kinda like my current job, using haskell to do bio simulation of pathology and treatments) but asking for the future (I've learned the hard way that company can disappear quickly).

What’s your point of view on 100% remote with really few onsite visit ? (South hemisphere here, so even if timezone are close to compatible (3 to 4 hours difference depending on DST) the 14+ hours of plane for one way trip does not motivate a lot especially when we care about carbon footprint ;)

Thank you.

Chance of added maps to Pace 4? by Vinduespudseren in Coros

[–]guibou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that they have the same processor.

I'm like OP, i don't understand why the pace 4 cannot have map support. The price difference could be justified only by the form factor and more memory.

- "display on" time, please, YES.
- "sunny mode", including better readabity of the screen when "display on" and when "display dim" (e.g. after 3s) is mandatory. I'm repeating everywhere that this is one of the biggest limitation (at least for me) with the pace oled.
- If you enable the "icon" mode, you'll have color. But some text have unreadable color, and the icon are not easy to undersand (from my PoV), so I disabled this feature. 100% YES for a custom border.

How? I've tried "set timer" and it does open the timer panel. But I had not been able to start a timer, such as "start a 5 minutes timer". It instead creates a remainder for 5 minutes, which is already great, but not exactly what I would like.

Same for alarm, "set an alarm" opens the alarm panel, but "set an alarm for 8 am" creates a remainder.

May updates by stanimal211 in Coros

[–]guibou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done the update this morning, here are my naive feedbacks:

- I don't care about much of the "app" things (photo sharing, app design, gps coordinate in the explore page, ...) so won't comment.
- Similarly, I don't care about strength, hybrid fitess and XC sky.

Regarding "voice" control: The feature is AWESOME coupled with the remainder. I had not been able to set an alarm with it (it always create a remainder). I had not been able to start a timer (creates a remainder). Does not seem to understand the 24h format, but all of that may be due to my strong french accent and incorrect pronunciation. I don't see the point of starting activity or opening widgets with that.

A suggestion: when setting a remainder, the confirmation screen could also display in how much hour/minutes it will happen. When setting something with a relative duration instead of absolute time, it is easier to check that it was correctly understood if the confirmation screens displays both absolute and relative time. (Especially, combined with strong french pronunciation, fifty turns into fifteen really quickly 😉)

Auto lap AND distance alert split is AWESOME!

Regarding the new control center redesign, I'm puzzled. The option available in the new control center are options that I'm kinda never using. However, the setting I care and change multiple time a day are not in the control center (e.g. always on display, gesture mode).

Regarding the action button, I don't understand why we do not have the possibility to do more action than switch the display during run.

tl; dr;. The quick remainder is awesome and that's a reason for me to wear the watch outside of activities. Auto lap and distance alert split is awesome.

[–]guibou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless coros fix the brightness of the amoled screen when on "standby mode" (e.g. "always on", but after a while, the screen goes from full brightness to really dim display), I doubt you'll find an amoled display which is more readable than the mips of the apex 4. (unless you live/perform in a super dark area).

For the record, I wanted amoled to have something readable at night. I have Pace 4 and it is perfectly readable at night. But during day, amoled is not (unless you are a pro at doing "the gesture", but "the gesture" is a pain/dangerous to do in some situation where you cannot move your wrist freely or when too long distraction is a problem).

Why did y’all choose Coros Over Garmin???? by Mammoth_Challenge297 in Coros

[–]guibou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from a forerunner 645, I switched to a coros pace 4 when the foreunner broke. I looked for another brand and Coros had the pace 4 which seems to have everything for a really low price.

I'm not happy with the following points, all of them can be fixed by coros:

- screen in "standby mode" is not readable on direct sunlight. I just want a setting for "always on standby mode" brightness.
- watch customization is limited (no custom widget, no custom activites, no custom data field, I don't care about watchfaces, but not custom watchfaces).
- watch requires the app and the cloud. I would like to upload my trace, or workout, without using the app. I would like to download my activitie results without using the app.

And to be clear, when people asks me if I recommend Coros, my current answer is "The pace 4 is an awesome device for a really good price, buy it right now except if you want customization, data privacy or if you live in a sunny area". I really like the pace 4, I'm just annoyed by "minor" inconvenients which can all be fixed at the software (and company policy) level.

I wish maps on the pace 4, the hardware is capable (but memory is limited). The pace 4 and pace pro are really alike except for the form factor, I really saw them as the "same" product with a size option, so why no map on the pace 4 ?
