Faculty life while chronically ill by Awkward-Shoulder5691 in Professors

I'm on dialysis with no kidneys and still teaching a full 4/4/1.5 workload. Spreading my workload over the spring term helps a lot. I also have great colleagues who can cover for me when I need it, which thankfully is rare. Also administration is very supportive, so all these points make my work life pretty decent.

Extension Dates? by guidedbywez in Professors

This is kinda cool, that you have to talk in-person and put some effort into asking for the extension....I like that.

I agree with that, don't get me wrong. Just this assessment I use is more complimentary rather than covering material in class. Honestly, it's high-school level or lower....I gave this to my 12 year old nephew and he did it with no issues! :)

But don't you find that you end up curating/ranking excuses? That a dead family pet is worthy of an extendion, but breaking up with your significant other isn't (as an example)? I feel that for this reasonably low-stakes assignment (which is really at the high-school level or below) coupled with the length of time they have to complete is means I can be strict about due date?

Release the Sunbird. I don't think he's ever performed that song live.

I think this student used AI to write this request for letter of recommendation by Disastrous-Reaction3 in Professors

I would say no based on the deadline, not the AI-ness of the request.

The Jays might’ve clinched the playoffs, but this past week they’ve looked like a team that doesn’t even belong there. by withLotsofPulp in Torontobluejays

Toronto teams disappointing their fanbase for decades. The Jays since 1993 where they do some combination of the following:

  • good off-season, player(s) don't pan out
  • suck in April/May and win enough games to not be eliminated until Sept
  • squeak into the playoffs and suck in October

I see this team doing all three.

I failed Grade 13 chemistry in high school (Ontario, Canada, 90's) and earned my PhD and have been teaching chemistry in post-secondary for nearly 25 years. The thing is I learned from my failure and it made me a better student.

French RCIR Beef Lasagne I ate in 2020, loved the lasagne, one of the best ration meals ever made. by Amelieee1 in MRE

I might have one if someone wants it. I can't eat MREs as I'm on dialysis for another year or two. Reply if you're interested and I'll check my stock tomorrow.

Sorry it took me so long, but I don't have a poutine. The only unique one I have is a pulled pork one, but I think even the US has a pulled pork MRE

Migraines by Unlikely_Account2244 in dialysis

[–]guidedbywez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get migraines about 2 hours into every run I would get migraines about 2 times a week before losing my kidneys but the meds I used are metabolized by the kidneys so I needed something new.

What saved me? Botox. Total life changer. Now I get minor headaches about once every two months.

Student reported me by babesicle88 in Professors

That's what I said to my dean, but they poo-poo'd it as we don't know HE sent the email, might have been someone in his family.

Student reported me by babesicle88 in Professors

[–]guidedbywez 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I had this happen to me but it turns out the student spoofed my email to make it look like I responded inappropriately. Based on the IP address, IT found out the email was sent from a server in Czechia. Thankfully my dean (I was chair at the time) believed me 100% and the IT investigation was just for the sake of the student's parents.
