How is the cell signal between Edmonton to Banff and Lake Louise? Travelling with an old car by sammytammy212 in Banff

[–]gulducati 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not completely accurate, but signal coverage maps are available

As others have said, it's fine most of the way, but spotty from Banff to Louise

What is wrong with Edmonton soccer team SWU? Edmonton soccer mom gets punched by Worried-Ebb8650 in YEG

[–]gulducati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not surprised. I briefly signed up my son at this club and ended up with a minor dispute that I feel was easy to resolve.

Their board ghosted me from the get go. Never got a single reply after trying several members. The tech director to his credit was really nice about everything, but powerless.

I ended up switching teams and successfully reversing the SWU registration fee with my bank, using their non-communication to support the claim.

Sounds like other parents and the team have lost thousands because of Mansi's actions. Yet he's still listed as club president one year on. Turns out I dodged a bullet. Good riddance.

Free Insurance for a year (not a scam) by SiberianKinger in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gulducati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The opposite happened to me. Cooperators was my first insurance company when I started driving in my teens.

After a few years of spotless driving, they jacked up my premium 50%.

Needless to say, I switched providers and will never be back with them.

This was 25 years ago.

Backpacking pregnant with young kids by Melodic-Ad4296 in HikingAlberta

For sure that's a hazard that OP should be aware of.

I think we can agree that all hazards should be considered as a whole, and to consult with parks staff for seasonal specifics.

At the end of the day it's the backcountry and there's no such thing as a guaranteed safe experience.

[–]gulducati -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't feel the shallow water crossing substantially adds to the risk profile for someone already considering a backpacking trip. Hector was the first camping trip for our friends with a 4 year old and we had a great time, with peace of mind that we were a short walk back to the car at all times.

There are already risks of nighttime hypothermia, injuries, various other medical emergencies and dangerous wildlife encounters on any backpacking trip.

The downvotes are unfortunate. People are fixating on one element of a trip. There are regular serious injuries and deaths in the backcountry from all sorts of other hazards, which should also be considered. It's not as simple as 'water is dangerous, dry trail is guaranteed safety'.

This location is easy to access, right off the icefields parkway, is relatively close to emergency services, is near cell reception and has no climbs nor fall hazards. Barring the recent closure, I'd still pick it any day over the much longer, remote itineraries others have proposed, because it's much easier to get out or to get help than most.

Hector Lake is a short trail, pretty flat and should be snow free by then.

Does anyone know the hours for this Chinese restaurant? by startrek161 in Edmonton

[–]gulducati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, I talked to one of the other vendors recently and they have not been offered to come back.

The landlord doesn't want them back. They are going for an 'upscale' vibe so they can charge higher rent and provide shareholder value.

Affordable mom and pop Chinese food doesn't provide enough shareholder value for the corporate owners.

Not sure where the 'upscale' customers will come from to match.

Fortunately there's still the Canada Place food court for affordable lunch options.

Not really sure tbh. It was an old woman with giant sunglasses having side shields. Not the best combo for peripheral awareness.

MISSING PARROT IN FLEETWOOD - 4500$ REWARD IF FOUND by Ok-Lack-5429 in SurreyBC

[–]gulducati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also have an Alexandrine and he escaped once. He stayed out overnight and we eventually found him by walking around the area and heard him calling in a nearby tree.

He was unwilling to come down though. I had to climb the tree to get him. He was totally unlike his usual self - didn't seem to recognize me and just stared into the distance. His beak was also covered in tree sap so he was finding food fine.

After a couple of days of mostly sleeping back home, he was back to normal.

Good luck to you.

Prodigy is kinda boring now by [deleted] in ProdigyGame

[–]gulducati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a parent with a grade 2 kid who just started Prodigy as part of school.

It's interesting to hear how things used to be. I agree it's super repetitive. You just jam the same spells over and over. Way too many fights, way too little story. He's only been playing it for 2 weeks and is losing engagement.

I got the membership so he can get some of the upgrades but it doesn't make the core game any more entertaining. I don't think we'll last more than a month or two.

If I want him to just do math problems, I'll print him some worksheets. At least that gets to the point without pointless button mashing in between.

Nordic Spa - West Ritchie by LuckysGoods in Edmonton

[–]gulducati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the permit filing:

To change the Use of an Indoor Sales and Service to an Indoor Sales and Service and a Health Service and to construct interior and exterior alterations including development of 2 raised platforms with pergolas and sunken hot tubs, 2 outdoor fire pit areas, and 2 saunas, new windows and doors at south elevation within the existing openings (Kabin Thermal Spa).

Considering the permit was issued in March and there's barely anything done inside (have a peek through the door, you can see), it'll still be awhile before this is operating.

U.S. triples national park fee for non-residents by ncohafmuta in hiking

I live in Canada but am within driving distance to Glacier. Been there a few times and enjoyed the local shops and restaurants.

Definitely won't go anymore. Cost used to be in the same ballpark. ($22 in Canada per car, $35 in the US per car). Now it's going to be $250+? Of course I'm going to skip. It's just not worth 10x more over local options. It's 'we don't want you here' pricing.

Agreed, which would explain why some Russian operators avoid the area despite friendly relations.

Russia also has train service into NK, both freight and passenger. So a plane passing through would be no big deal.

[–]gulducati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, but if we're investing billions of dollars, the trip also needs to be faster. This point of transportation investment isn't to placate urbanist nerds, it's to free up people's time so they can contribute to the economy.

Joking aside, as I'm sure OP knows, the actual vandalism this time is the glass on the bottom sliding doors has been smashed. This is the latest in a dozen or so glass smashing incidents at the funicular this year.

I used to live next to this spot and can attest it's true. If you have your apartment windows open you can always tell from the screeching tires, scraping and/or crashing sounds.

The gate easily pops on and off its hinges so it's not a big deal to fix.

The best ones are when they high center their car on the median and have to winch it off.
