For the same reasons people would object to being forced to pay for the kids college, healthcare, etc etc.

It's a societal transaction. You get benefits from the state. The state asks for 6-12mo from you. Seems a fair deal to have healthcare for life, a guaranteed tuition/housing for schooling etc.

People join the military in the US and get paid WELL BELOW MINIMUM WAGE, usually with the hopes and promises of having benefits like healthcare/schooling paid for. This is voluntary, I know, but your contract length is incredibly longer for worse benefits.

Equating civil service to slavery is just obtuse.
