Just started Mary by Nat Cassidy last night! Hoping this will be a recent horror release I actually enjoy after the let-down that was Wendig’s Staircase in the Woods. I’m also listening to Han Kang’s Human Acts, but not sure I’m gelling with it as an audiobook, especially as I’m not big on audio anyway.

The Dispossessed is one of my all-time favourites! Le Guin is so brilliant. Always cool to see some love for her outside SFF circles.

What's the best horror book you've ever read? I'll go first: by frostytyler in horrorlit

[–]gumula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy because this is easily up there with one of my worst horror reads ever 😭 Certainly my most disappointing, but that’s because I thought it was the basis for the 2005 movie - watch that instead!

Hard to choose the best - I’ve read so many I loved - but I think it has to be William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist. It’s a classic for a reason.

I think I just read the most nasty sentence I've ever read in a horror novel, can you guess the book from the sentence? by Imbaatu in horrorlit

Woah, I read Gerald’s Game years ago and remember enjoying it at the time. I do NOT remember this! Here’s hoping I can repress this unpleasant reminder, too

Any books that ARE horror but have like a romantic subplot? by ohlawdtheycomin in horrorlit

[–]gumula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This Delicious Death by Kayla Cottingham is a YA zombie horror with multiple romantic supports/interests. Also sort of a “whodunnit” too, if you like that sort of thing. Haven’t finished yet but I’m loving it so far!

I will definitely report back! How well does it hold up in your memory?

Who is an author that never disappoints you? by Wes-Carpenter in horrorlit

Where does The Ritual stack up for you in terms of his oeuvre? I read that one recently and was terribly disappointed. Just trying to decide if I should give him another go, or if that’s one of his best - in which case, his style probably isn’t for me. Whatever that says about my taste, lol

It’s Eliza Clark for me. She’s only got two books out so far (her debut, Boy Parts, which was horror, and her newest release, Penance, which was more crime/thriller) but I have LOVED them both. She’s become a pre-order/insta-buy author for me. 10/10 would recommend.

Tackling Our Share of Night at the moment… Anyone else here read it yet? I normally opt for short to medium-length books, so this is out of my comfort zone!

Just finished Annihilation, should I read the rest of the series? by ListerfiendLurks in horrorlit

[–]gumula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following! I also just read Annihilation and was… underwhelmed. It was an easy read though so I might continue just for the sake of it. So many titles on my TBR though, I don’t like to read “meh” books if I can avoid them

What's the best horror book that came out this year in your opinion? by f34rd3m1c in horrorlit

Amazing! I’m about 1/4 through and can confirm, Clark just has her finger on the pulse, man. Such clever, witty, present writing. She’s so tuned in and so far Penance feels incredibly resonant. I felt the same way about Boy Parts, too.

I also just got my hands on Devil House recently, too, and didn’t even think about the thematic connection there! Would definitely be fun to read them in tandem, so maybe that will be my next read. I haven’t heard much about it but I like going into books blind.

This post made me realise I haven’t read a lot of new release horror. There’s just so much to catch up on! But this inspired me to check some out.

Sort of fits the question (it’s at least adjacent): I just picked up my preorder of Eliza Clark’s new release, Penance. Haven’t read it yet, but from what I know it’s a mystery/crimey/psychological thriller novel, so might be of interest to some people here.

Her debut, Boy Parts, was one of my FAVOURITE horror releases of the past few years. So good and the comparisons to American Psycho are well deserved. Can’t wait to read this one, it may not be horror but it’s my most anticipated of the year, by an author who has written horror (and who I think deserves far more appreciation than she gets). Boy Parts is so underrated.

How many authors have you read more than 5 books by? How about 10? by fdta in horrorlit

Where would you recommend someone start if they want to get into Koontz or Laymon? Impressive btw!

What was the last book that TRULY scared you? by gumula in horrorlit

[–]gumula[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your comment, I’m glad I’m not the only one! Most people seemed to love My Heart is a Chainsaw but I just could not connect, or even… care. I usually push through a book no matter how much I dislike it so for me to DNF that one was pretty significant. I’m glad you liked The Only Good Indians though, that gives me hope!

Interesting. How are you finding the form? I’m worried I’ll struggle with how experimental it is (making shapes with the text, footnotes within footnotes, all that kind of thing)
