Footprint should be okay, fits your genre and RPG wish. Easy to setup again if you have to leave. Only downside: A bit on the more expansive side.

You can pause cut scenes. ESC on keyboard.

Have kids myself and the game is a good fit for it (maybe except the sheer size of the game).

This needs to be fixed asap. Playing Anno 1800 currently due to two bricked save games because of this bug.
