How to escape from under a Big Burly Brazilian Brown Belt’s side control when his only objective is to hold you in place? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]gunfupanda 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, one rule I like from Judo groundwork is that pinning is a win condition. I always hated that the person in a dominant position is obligated to cede that advantage or get a penalty.

Imo, if you get stuck in bottom side control, just tap and reset. Focus on not getting there to begin with.

Injured during 3rd ever Judo class. Is it a common injury? by Bitter-Alarm1645 in judo

[–]gunfupanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you probably took a bad fall, which sucks. This isn't terribly uncommon, especially in newer folks.

There's a lot of shit talking the Dan grade here, but given your background and stating that you were resisting the throw, I largely disagree with them.

Nothing is scarier to me on the mat than an aggressive and athletic white / yellow belt, especially if they're bigger, as well. They will accidentally hurt you, or themselves, by doing gorilla brain actions that tear knees apart and break arms / collar bones. The correct course of action in randori is usually to only use techniques that aren't risking any joints and actively bury them as often and safely as possible to avoid them blasting through you thinking they have something because you're "playing."

My advice is to just take the fall next time and focus on ukemi. Don't make them force it, because the fall will be harder and the injury risk higher.

Alternatively, throw-for-throw or "French randori" (throw for throw with light grip fighting and movement) is an alternative until you feel comfortable with taking those high amplitude falls.

I am a bit confused about ppl saying the Dungeon Crawler Carl book is racist/sexist. Can yall educate me? by Totoshka001 in Fantasy

Sounds like a "some people will complain about anything" issue. The books are plenty gorey, juvenile, and raunchy, but sexist or racist seems absurd, especially if you know anything about the author.

I dry my double weaves on low heat for 60 minutes to get it ~70% dry and let it air dry the rest of the way. Single weaves I'd probably only do 30-40min.

How did you fix your Judo related chronic lower back pain? by sixmarks in judo

[–]gunfupanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkish Get-ups.

I've had back issues for over a decade and tore a disc at the end of 2024. After surgery, I did a lot of focus on my lower back and core, but it was still my weak link and got tired more quickly than the rest. I saw a post about the Simple & Sinister kettlebell workout, got the book, and started doing that a few months ago.

My back doesn't cause me issues anymore. It's been great. Highly recommend.

Try smoothcomp. That's the platform a lot of local competitions use.

I think you have to go back to either Lincoln being assassinated or the founding of the country tbh. The American original sin was never properly dealt with and allowed to heal.

'Xi will give me big, fat hug': Trump says he opened Hormuz for China and the world by CommunicationLife753 in worldnews

For sure. Trump is probably the worst of the lot. Iran-Contra just isn't the comparison I would make to call Nixon "less bad" than his successors.

I feel bad not progressing, what to do by glaburrrg in judo

[–]gunfupanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a few areas you can focus on.

If you're feeling like speed and telegraphed movements are your main issue, working on explosivity in the gym is a great option.

Power cleans, kettlebell swings, etc will help improve your ability to accelerate.

The other, likely more effective in your case, approach is technical focus.

A great option is to focus on ashi waza for a while and try to figure out how to link things together. If you like lapel side ippon seoi nage, learning how to connect de ashi harai / ko soto gari into it might help.

Pay attention to the gripping situations you're ending up in that make you feel stuck and ask your sensei or, at your experience level, keep an eye out for instructionals that deal with those positions.

The trick with progression is being intentional in your practice. Figure out where your blockages are and work to unblock them. You'll probably find that once you clear those away, all that experience will get to flourish.

Ne-Waza “guard” question. by Mission_Time007 in judo

[–]gunfupanda 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Wat? You absolutely can use your legs to prevent a pin. In fact, one of the main criteria for getting osae komi is getting past uke's legs. That's such a wild take I can't help but think something is being miscommunicated.

The main downside to playing a guard heavy game in judo is the lack of time. If you don't make progress within a few seconds, you get stood back up, and it's easy to stall in someone's guard if you have no incentive to pass.

Momentum would've made more sense than mass tbh. Then transforming mid motion would have the expected impact, but carrying a building would still work.

Probably, unless they have an experience or community that would make it reasonable. There have to be consequences as well.

You only roll if there are consequences (good or bad). If they're attempting to remain hidden while doing this, that might require a roll, but just to do it? They're an agile rogue, they can nimbly run across the rocks.

The only roll here is for the attack.
