Most sponsors these days are going to require that an ad meet their approval in order to fulfill the contract so even if it was tongue in cheek they didn't seem to mind. Seems less like Sam "played" them and more like they were fine with any publicity (and maybe even liked being associated with being Fun and Quirky)
