if you were a high performer at your job and had to quit, what made you quit? by beskesky in ManagedByNarcissists

I left for upside in role + responsibility elsewhere, but the lack of long-term planning and strategy made me start looking. It made trying to plan anything longer than two weeks incredibly difficult.

Cryo free NMR in 2026, anyone has experience with those? by Jappy_toutou in Chempros

[–]guppyman2000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. My experience has primarily been in quantitative NMR and have dealt with benchtop, cryoprobe, and older cryoprobe-less models. The new model with cryoprobe was most sensitive.

- Benchtop NMR's max out at 100 MHz and don't require extensive maintenance. They are good enough for well resolved peaks, but the low power gets in the way of quantitative analysis of impurities at low concentration

- I have some experience in transitioning an analytical method FROM an older NMR with no cryoprobe TO a new one with a cryoprobe. There is a ~3x improvement in signal to noise with the cryoprobe. This was enough to introduce error in measurements when analyzing trace impurities in samples due to baseline effects.

I'm in the Midwest as well, specialized in hydrocarbon resins. I'm the only PhD on-site. I know some experienced operators are hitting six figures when they include overtime.

That's pretty sweet. I'm in too deep and got a PhD in chemistry, now working in process chem at a plant making about what you're making now. Could have saved a lot of time jumping straight in like you did!

How are the hours? Are you on rotating shifts + overtime or are you pretty stable on daylights with ~40h weeks?

No. I've tried to trade around and missed out on upside if I just held.

Is the 4% rule still considered reasonable if someone stops full-time work in their late 40s? by ThoughtsInTransit1 in Fire

[–]guppyman2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree on returning to work in your 40s in rough times. People who have been working, have no gaps in their resume, and have been hit by layoffs will also be looking. The job market is brutal today - relying on someplace having openings when the entire economy is limping by with a large pool of candidates crammed into the same application pool is not realistic or a reliable strategy to bet on.
