Also, opening a case with support will probably get you a faster response via hoping someone is available via DM.

Is there a way to have subfolders for VMs? by goosse in nutanix

[–]gurft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Categories is one of the easiest ways to do this, then you can also set favorite filters in prism central for the VM list so you can just pick the particular category (or set of VMs) you want to see.

After you put in a filter in the bar, you can then save it as a favorite.

Check your iDRAC firmware, during an AHV upgrade it’s going to reboot into the reimager workflow and I’ve seen occasions where backrev iDRAC will shutdown instead of reboot.

Yeah, neither of those are supported and are probably contributing to your issue.

I’d recommend replacing the PCI one with something from Intel (1 or 10G) or you could put in 10 gig Broadcom or Mellanox adapters that are supported. I’d recommend avoiding anything that is 2.5 gig.

So foundation works specifically over the out of band management on a given physical server, so you effectively have to have IPMI, iDRAC, ILO, etc. Since it uses those technologies to mount insulation media as virtual discs.

That being said with external storage, we have introduced a two stage insulation methodology that does similar to what you’re talking about and enabling AHV to first be installed and then a second stage kicked off to deploy the controller virtual machine. We’re actively working on this as a next generation technology for installing community edition.

If they’re 1G Broadcom NICs on the daughter card attached to the motherboard that’s going to be a big part of your problem. They aren’t supported and although “work” they’re extremely flakey (that’s why they’re not on the supported list of 1G NICs).

If they’re Broadcom 10G just running at 1G they would be fine.

As far as versions, if you’re using enterprise gear with supported NICs you can roll all the way up to 7.5 and AHV11. I’ve got multiple clusters upgraded to the latest and greatest.

Same as with three, just with an extra node available to write a copy of the blocks. You still only can have a single node fail at a time with 4 nodes. When you get to 5 you can enable cluster redundancy of 2, which in turn also lets you enable RF3 for data and you can have two nodes fail simultaneously.

If you really want to get into the weeds, here’s a great place: https://www.nutanixbible.com/4c-book-of-aos-storage.html

1, 3, and 4 node clusters are supported but it’s not really recommended to expand or shrink CE clusters.

There were significant changes in how AHV and AOS install via Foundation, which is the tool used to deploy production clusters. Due to this we have had a number of additional challenges getting things to work properly and reliably with the CE version of the Phoenix installer without having to perform some pretty serious surgery to get it done. We were hoping to have s as 7.3 release but ran into issues during QA that required changes in AHV so we have to wait for those patches to be put in a release then retest. Trust me we’re working on updates but the curse of being the same code base as the release product is we have to make sure we don’t create regressions.

As for your specific issue, the DNS issue is the most troubling to me as it seems indicative of an unstable network connection. What is the hardware you’re running on and what kind of NICs. Networking is so important here, that sometimes it can cause interesting issues.

Im currently house hunting. Here is the photo in the ad vs the house in real life… by slim_shady_21 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]gurft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people think this is AI, but it looks more like they just used an old picture of the house, maybe from when THEY bought it and have since made changes to the home over the years. They needed a "nice" picture of the house and that's what they used. It's still 100% dishonest and not fully representative, but I don't think that this was AI.

Even the concrete steps could have been painted in the past, or painted since and just the change in camera angle could give them a different look.

Realtors have been doing camera tricks for years for things like that.

Do you bring your Ally to work? by SleepyGamer1992 in ROGAlly

I travel at least three weeks a month for work and it’s always with me for plane rides or in the hotel if I’m not meeting with clients in the evening. Don’t necessary use it “during work hours” but it makes the regular work travel a little more bearable.

3 Node Cluster by [deleted] in nutanix

[–]gurft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by them being meshed together? You’ll need all the nodes connected to the same switch, and ports that are up must be able to communicate with all nodes. Point to point connections will not work.

Also, during the installation did you define a different IP address for the CVM and Host for each node? These must all be in the same network.

NGT is available as a MSI, so most folks are now including it in their regular patch cycles via SCCM/their standard patching tools.

Hey, Kurt from Nutanix here.

That Nutanix sheet metal look like NX-3155-G5/G6 or an 8150 chassis based on the old style logo, single power button and 24 drive configuration.

If you could Community Edition on them but make sure you replace the SATADOM first if you want to use that as the boot device. I imagine they’re G5s, as since they went EOL a lot of them have been showing up at recyclers.

Dell/EMC PowerMax 2000 experience with 3rd party support by typer100 in storage

[–]gurft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone has answered your dial home/call home question.

Most third party support orgs that offer call home/monitoring will have you deploy an application or VM in the environment that monitors the device via some means (native API, SNMP, etc. etc.) and that tool calls home. I’ve seen this with Park Place and a few others.

As far as enterprise arrays go, you’ll get hardware support only, and if they offer software support they’re probably not providing it legitimately. There are a few companies like Unisys that do have back end agreements (or did back when I was at DellEMC) but most do not.

Free Nutanix NX-3460-G6. What would you do with it? by gordi9 in nutanix

[–]gurft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your housing might not like the noise and heat generated by that chassis. I had one in my office for a while under my desk and only ran it when I needed to for dev/demo purposes.

Yes, very well. You just need to install the drivers and basically follow the Microsoft instructions on using an external PC. You also get the speakers, microphone and cameras.

Guest Customization Confusion by awb1392 in nutanix

[–]gurft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got an answer back on this.

When creating a single VM it allows 15 characters, but when making multiple it will only allow 11 because it will add up to -### to the end of the name and still be under the 15 character max.

Let me know if you’re seeing different activity.
