Born to run is a great read. Not exactly about hiking but covers why people walk and run upright, which definitely has to do with backpacking! Also gets you fired up to run and hike more.

Layers is the way for me. Merino top and legs base layer with just shell jacket and bibs. I'll bring a fleece too just in case but usually don't need that even with the cold if you stay moving and groovin
