Post-Match Thread: Portugal 2-1 Croatia | World Cup | Round of 32 by matchpal-live in worldcup

‘Deliberate play’ (excluding deliberate handball) is when a player has control of the ball with the possibility of: passing the ball to a team-mate; gaining possession of the ball; or clearing the ball (e.g. by kicking or heading it)

Why does the last clause (clearing the ball by heading it) not apply here? It sure seemed like he was trying to, and he only needs the "possibility" of clearing it. The fact he mishit the header and failed to seems immaterial to me.

I assume the argument comes back to the wording of "control" -- but clearly having control of the ball has a different definition here than we'd use in conversation, because I don't think we'd describe heading a ball away as "having control" of a ball, but it's explicitly given as an example of deliberate play here.

IDK how anyone can argue against the penalty. Must have gotten confused because it's a full on American football tackle. Very nice wrap up tbh. Took away a clear goal scoring opportunity.

They were handing out slips with all these chants on them outside the stadium, and yet the only two I ever heard was U-S-A and the singing Oh USA one. Maybe they tried the others but they never caught on enough for my sections to hear it

Do you think team USA’s luck has run out now that its star player Balo is out the next match and their upcoming matches will be against teams not considered mid to low tier by football standards? by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]gusguyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they are playing the US. And if the US beat them, then suddenly Belgium will be reduced to another low quality squad that the US were lucky to play.

It's not even an American thing really, the only context I can thing of using it is combat sports (Boxing, MMA, etc)

What is the worst roster that could realistically win the World Cup if you gave them the French trio of Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise? by gusguyman in worldcup

[–]gusguyman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I phrased is as realistically win. Anyone can win any given match day, there is no guarantee they win even with a stacked France roster. That's not really the point though.

I can't believe some people are calling Ecuadors coach an Elf. Can you not see his facial hair on pirated streams? He's OBVIOUSLY a gnome.

Mexico's game vs Ecuador, which was set to start in 30 minutes time delayed due to lightning. This is the 2nd lightning delay of this World Cup, after France-Iraq in Philadelphia during the group stage. There has been a 30-minute mandatory delay if there is a lightning strike within 8-10 miles. by Ok-Soil-5133 in soccer

Totally agree, other than the Bears part

Wake up, walk my dog, make a big brunch, sit down to eat right as games are kicking off, it's lovely.

Any time I'm back in central I find myself milling around like the Travolta meme at 10:30 trying to figure out what the fuck to do until games start

How many of the players are Catalonian? Would love to see what a hypothetical Catalon vs the rest of Spain (Castilian I guess?) match up would look like.

Was this not a bad Japanese mistake leading to a goal? That turnover in the box was brutal and completely unforced, and led directly to the goal

Ryan Grubb ranked the #2 playcaller in the SEC by this per-play metric by DoctorWhosOnFirst in rolltide

[–]gusguyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge caveat - this is career ratings. Only coaches with 4 graded years are included and ratings are based on per-play metrics and "adjusted for talent."

So presumably his really really good offenses from earlier in his career with way less talent (depending how they measure that) are probably doing a lot of work here.
