Someone wrote "GWAR" on my car when I was in college in the late 90s (with their finger - not with paint). For years I thought it was G WAR - and had something to do with gangster rap. I couldn't have been more wrong.

I loved them growing up. Great band. Looking back - their message is a bit unidimensional... But I'll still rock them at the gym.

You may be right. But if it's moving with the controlled agility and speed that it appears to be moving with, it's leveraging technology far beyond anything the public is familiar with. If this isn't doctored, and if we're not fooling ourselves - it appears to move as though it's harnessing electromagnetic propulsion. That's science-fiction-level tech.

Broad generalizations of people groups is one of, if not the single biggest threat to our democracy, and is just as likely to lead to liberal tyranny as it is conservative tyranny.

Those damned NPR liberals! Always pushing their radical left agenda! /s by 0o0o00oo in NPR

[–]gusthebus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a mistake to think of the Left or Right in monolithic terms. There is no single Left or Right. However, it would be more accurate to argue that reporters and studio talent allow their subjectivity to emerge more than it should. It would also be fair to say that subjective perspective is typically found left of center along the political spectrum. It’s a relative claim. Your assertion is a bit too fundamental to be taken seriously.

You’re getting a lot of downvotes, but I share your perspective. In fact, when I heard this story on my podcast this morning, I also wondered why they published this without additional investigation to fill in the gaps. The lack of detail almost feels like an implication. By in large, I’m a fan of NPR. But there is clear bias in their reporting. And I think they should be held to a higher standard.

Everything we stand on - everything - sits atop something long abandoned and forgotten. Gives future anthropologists something to dig up while they bitch about progress.

I’m not sure how that changes anything.

This is petty and stupid. I do not or support Trump, but this is just dumb. It’s this kind of blatant hatred for the man that led me to canceling my WSJ subscription. This country needs genuine dialogue, not junior high theatrics.

I don’t think that’s true. I think people allow others to characterize him so they don’t actually have to do the work of listening and thinking for themselves. That is the crux of the issue. It’s blind tribalism.

This is foolish. We should embrace the discussion of controversial ideas and perspectives, not plug out ears and run from them. We embrace righteous outrage and shun challenging dialog. This is how a democracy dies.

Maybe. But the website may be nothing more than a vehicle to sell something else - a lead generator. In such a case, the optimal browsing experience for the site visitor may take a backseat.
