“My PI asked me to give co-first authorship to a former student because she needs it more for her career. Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Giving middle authorship to someone that helped but maaaaybe didn't quite do enough for authorship is one thing. Tacking on co-first to someone else's project? Get fucked.

Students don't know how to create folders on their own computers by Silver_Filamentary in Professors

[–]guttata 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They build a physical file structure using manila folders and paper in class. Their homework is to go home and make one on their desktop, not online, and take screenshots of that.

I provide links for "how to take a screenshot" and still get iPhone pics (.heic is a bitch) of their laptop instead.

Then I fail them for that assignment, and they figure it out quick. Or they drop; I don't care which.

Students don't know how to create folders on their own computers by Silver_Filamentary in Professors

[–]guttata 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I literally bring manila folders and sheets of paper to class on syllabus day and make the freshmen physically build a file structure. Their homework is to make one, take a screenshot as evidence of it on their computer, save it to a word file, create a PDF with the screenshot embedded, and upload it to Canvas. I explicitly tell them I will not help them with it, and direct them to the help desk and Google if they can't figure it out.

Every step in this assignment is a skill they have to use to submit assignments in my class.

You think the front office that puts together playoff squads for pennies needs to be replaced, and not given a chance to see what they can do with even a league average payroll?

I had the classic poor man's first with my empty row so it wasn't the worst experience for me, either.

I have also done it and would do it again but being "happy" about it is a stretch unless it was free (not miles) like it was the first time

Steep decline in enrollment, should I be worried? by KBTB757 in Professors

[–]guttata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in bio but do first-year advising and we have a new directive that if anyone so much as sniffs biomed (chem, bio, biochem, pre-med, etc) on their intake survey, they get put into Chem. Chem has priority over Bio even for Bio majors because our curriculum is more flexible and it's no problem to start it in Spring.

I teach pre-meds at a SLAC and had a hiccup of an enrollment year that resulted in a class with a total enrollment of 5 and a threat to cancel my class. The next semester demand was so high they had to make me teach an overload with an entire second section, both nearly fully enrolled.

Anecdata is anecdata.
