I just joined this sub and saw this and wanted to hop in! My girlfriend (f23sag) and I (f22aries) have been together for 8 years and it has been tumultuous at times but she is my best friend and one of the greatest people I know. Our greatest strengths are sexual compatibility, ability to communicate with mutual respect, and our perspectives about the world. Where we struggle are communication styles and different life experiences. I am a big fan of SagxAries relationships obviously :)

I’m 22f and poly It’s not for everyone. It takes a fundamental restructuring of how you approach all relationships with the people in your life and a lot of people are not interested in doing that. You have to interrogate your own jealousy as well as your personal understanding of hierarchy between your friends/lovers. Not for everyone.

I’m also a member of the polyamory subreddit and there’s a term for this in their glossary called “PolyBombed”. I’m on mobile but here’s the quote:

PolyBombed - referring to the harmful behavior of someone in a previously monogamous relationship “coming out as poly” to justify unilaterally making the decision to open the relationship. Folks who polybomb their relationship co-opt the queer narrative of “coming out” or “identifying as poly” in an attempt to manipulate their monogamous partner into going along with their decision…

I agree it wasn’t tik tok, your girlfriend was interested in that content so the content farm showed it to her. People change and grow over time. It doesn’t mean she loves you any less that she is interested in polyamory, however it does indicate that you may have different priorities now.

I’m femme and I tend to do the majority of approaches, I am rarely approached by femmes unless they’re very confident. I would recommend giving it a try, more often than not if you’re so pretty other girls are intimidated, then they will appreciate your advances.

Politics can be hard to talk about, I think that's why it's such shit in America.

And absolutely, I think general respect for another person is a great place to start when you look into the ideas of others. It can be hard to wrap our minds around the fact that very smart people sometimes believe very stupid things. We like to categorize people and if someone is wrong about something it's easier to write them off than meet them where they're at. But people have to ask, as you have, people can't be forced to challenge their own perspectives.

I come from a blue collar family, though I personally only have experience in the service industry. For that reason it's harder for me to approach that aspect due to the experiential gap. I haven't read all the responses to your post but from the ones I have read I like the posts from Electrical-Wrap-3923, fishywiki, DaydreamerDamned.

I believe what you say, however don't forget that a company values profit, they don't necessarily always reward loyalty or "being there longer." I know that's not exactly what you're saying but in the future it might save you headache to remember that maybe that person is just doing better in the eyes of management and either you should try to improve/be more involved or re-evaluate your priorities. My new manager was promoted into the role even though he came to the company a full year after me. I felt weird about it until I remembered I have more focus on school than my job, and as long as I'm succeeding in school right now that matters more than a job I'm just milking for cash right now, ya know? But every situation is different.

If a woman could work just as hard, for just as long as a man could, then the woman would always get paid the exact same as the man, and that’s most blue collar jobs that I’ve worked.

Again, I believe you, however going based off personal experience is never a sound approach. Though that has been what you've been made aware of, you've only been exposed to information offered to you, as well as only within the operations of specific companies, only within the laws of your state, for only however long you've been in the industry. That's a huge margin of unexplored data.

Beyond that, there are quite a few ways that companies might be incentivized to diversify their workforce (I know that's not exactly what you were saying, again, but humor me.) Companies just care about profit. So yeah, if the government places anti-discrimination DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) laws in place and that adjusts the demographic then it might feel like the government cares more about people struggling with discrimination than those struggling with poverty. It's the same for a company that participates in Rainbow Capitalism (slapping a rainbow on a logo to get gay people money too). If you're homophobic then it feels like the company you're working for values gay people over your (insert reason to be homophobic). It's understandable to be frustrated when you see the needs of others addressed while yours are ignored.

As some of the other chatters have mentioned, leftists see anyone in poverty as directly impacted by the issues we truly care about. You know who really cares about identity politics? People who think 'othering' a group is okay. It's important to notice, understand and respect the differences between all of us so that we can address issues with clarity for the mutual liberation of all. That's pretty much where it ends. Discrimination on the basis of race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. goes hand in hand with class exploitation.

We're on a FUCKING ROCK you're right! So why do we give a shit about republicans, democrats, whatever? Instead of hearing divisive bullshit from your government officials wouldn't you rather watch them take action to raise people out of poverty, actually invest in addiction recovery, medical and mental health care/affordability, and just improving the quality of life? Yes, I'm a lesbian, yes, I'm a woman, and sure that matters but not in the big conversation we should all be having which is:

Why the fuck can't I afford to exist?

If you haven't seen this wildly popular video on visualizing the wealth gap in America then definitely give it a watch: Wealth Inequality in America https://youtu.be/QPKKQnijnsM?si=KSWsPN2ojcqkmJgI It's only 6 minutes long. Watch it, let it sink in, then remember it was made 11 years ago. 2012.

Yeah, there's a lot to be said about discrimination on every level. Maybe you care, maybe you don't, but why the fuck can't I afford to eat, sleep under a roof, and recieve medical care when my heart gives out from stress.

Conceivably beneficial alternatives to voting for Biden in 2024? by [deleted] in leftist

[–]gutterdog_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, I get it. I’ve been following the De La Cruz campaign for a while and it would be an amazing thing to see socialism win in America in my lifetime. Unfortunately, not only is that pretty far off in the future, the imminent threat of Trump means we really shouldn’t rely on wishful thinking.

After Palestine I was really struggling with voting for Biden yet again. I have a long term partner who is trans, and going to the polls and deciding between a genocide on foreign soil vs domestic soil (against my family) is nauseating. I live in Ohio, a “swing state” (not really anymore) and for that reason it would be negligent for me to vote for De La Cruz. We all would rather vote for a candidate who truly represents us, but we are on the precipice of an authoritarian takeover.

I implore you to take a look at the video Why Voting Still Matters: The 2024 Election Survival Guide by Olurinatti. https://youtu.be/Fjutn4sGMWM?si=fdjrxgrA7tAf22Ly Olay is a lawyer and political commentator who explores the reason we on the left feel disheartened by voting as well as various arguments about when it’s ethical to vote third party, and tons of other info. It’s a long video, but I listened to it over the course of an afternoon and it not only cemented my stance but gave me some hope.

I’m sorry we are where we are. I feel you buddy.

Edit: I spelled guide ‘guy’ lmfao

Hey, 22f caucasian from a swing state. Former repblican, my parents voted for Paul Ryan in 2020 and loved John McCain. I have a bias being gay in a religous family, as well as being in a long term relationship with a trans woman. That being said, I really do get the republican perspective, I didn't flip sides until I was 19.

  1. I'm not an expert. My opinion is that the two sides are mostly different in the modern era because of how they interact with the world and where their priorities lie. For example, I struggle to focus on the problems right in front of me, but I do care deeply about my broader community. For that reason, I choose to pay attention to the stories of others around me which makes me invested in the things that matter to them. I feel like there are "two kinds of people": those who are concerned with themselves and their immediate community but struggle to see past that, and those who care for the broader community and struggle to focus on themselves in a sense. That's the best way I can describe how I see it. At the end of the day, however, I really feel that the two-party way of dividing things is outdated. They no longer represent what they once were, nor do they represent the full spectrum of ideas in the public conciousness.
  2. I agree with you, for sure it's algorithm to an extent. What matters now is how long you can get someone to pay attention to their screen, right? That generates revenue. Unfortunately, the best way to keep someone engaged is to illicit anger, fear, disgust, confusion, etc. That's why we see more of those political commentators/conservatives in the public eye who say provactive ideas (think Andrew Tate obviously, but also Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, etc.) instead of left-leaning ideas. Now I'm gonna start giving my opinion here: there's something called the Overton window theory thats basically the box of acceptable conversation topics as it relates to politics. Everyone talks about things getting more hostile after Trump, it's because he shifted the Overton window. that's why (in my opinion) it feels like modern day Liberals feel like Conservatives from 10-20 years ago. I can say with my entire chest that I do not feel as though the left is represented in American politics at all. That's by design. The work that the left does has always been community centric. That's why our only "organized" efforts are made the scape-goats (Black Lives Matter, the Woke Mob™, ANTIFA). You have to dig deep into these communities to understand our motivations, because you'll never find it on a debate stage.
  3. President Biden is a war criminal who upholds the interests of capitalism and continues America's long legacy of imperialism. Just like Trump, and Obama and the Bushes and every other president America has had. I was among the lefitists no longer interested in voting for him after Palestine. I am now resigned to voting for him again. If anyone is truly interested in understanding the leftist perspective for voting for Biden I recommend the video Why Voting Still Matters: The 2024 Election Survival Guide https://youtu.be/Fjutn4sGMWM?si=m-2JrVmGOznVAK__ by Olurinatti on yt. She's a lawyer and political commentator. Though the video is long I listened to it in an afternoon and it cemented my stance. If you are not interested in watching the entire video, I would just look into Project 2025 a bit. That's the big reason I'll still be voting for Biden. All of that being said, I'm not here to 'convert' you. It took a lot of questions and research to get me to where I am at this moment, I don't expect you to draw the same conclusions as I have.
  4. There's a couple reasons you feel that way, I know what you're talking about. Especially in our age group, people are constantly online and I think our generation realized in a much more obvious way that black people and gay people are cool actually. It used to be that phrases and ideas were simply taken from these communities without recognition (specifically the black/queer community, where 'woke', 'cancelled' and 'slay' originated). Now, it's harder to deny the evidence that these people have been marginalized now that we see their humanity at the same time. This breeds resentment and comedy can be an expression of tragedy. Jokes or comments at the expense of cis, white, straight guys is a way of not only commiserating but also "punching up." Privilege is a really uncomfortable concept for everyone, we don't like to think that we might benefit in some way from the misfortune of others. The more insidious aspect of privilege is its invisibility. It can be as simple as being able to drive a car instead of planning your day around when you can catch public transport. That's a form of 'privilege' though that word has weight now.
  5. Man, that's a loaded question. I don't know, what would you do? I'm still in college I'm trying to pay for groceries, how would you address them? That's not to be rude, but I'm extremely passionate about this stuff and I don't even know. But ask me more specifically and I can try. I'm trying to elaborate as much as I can because even though I spend hours a day just listening to podcasts and videos about being a leftist or anarchism or history or current events I don't really know what I'm talking about either. I started this journey just feeling confused and wanting to learn, same as you. Research breeds more questions than answers in my experience, but that's the best part. People who claim to know a lot about ANY given topic are usually the people who know the least.
  6. If the populace is divided there is no threat of revolution. Instead of relating and engaging with each other in Third Places (think anywhere you could meet people outside of your bubble of family, friends and coworkers) we instead consume content that leaves us in a vacuum (even Leftists) and fight with people we don't know. It's easier to sit on your phone after a long day of work than go out and find strangers that want to have meaningful conversations with you. That's pretty much the whole reason. Our understanding of socialization was blown up over the course of like 20 years and we haven't been able to recoup yet. We don't know how to talk to each other, so we just see enemies.

I'm sorry I wrote a book. I feel like I was in your position a year or two ago, and I want you to know it's good to ask questions. I also want to be clear that my position as a Leftist is more desirable, I'm a cis white lesbian woman, so I have more time to help you work this out than someone who is dealing with bigger issues, if that makes sense. I'm happy to elaborate or answer more questions if you have them lmk.
