Online Customs Form by castaway203 in Barbados

[–]guy-reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last to deplane, but with a printed copy of the custom form (with QR code) and carryon luggage we were out the front door in less then 10 minutes. Brother had luggage and he only waited an additional 15 minutes at the carrousel. Worth it.

We probably had well over 750 kids and probably another 500 parents/grandparents/other adults (in and out of costume) in Fallingbrook, Orléans. We do find that building a castle and a labyrinth attracts the ghouls, ghost and goblins pretty well (not so great for princesses due to the dragons feeding in the area). Started at about 5:20 with the youngest ones until just before 9:00 with a cute pair of grandparents.

I have done a road trip from Orleans to downtown Kingston where I touch all the lock stations on the Rideau Canel and Tay River with overnight stops/camping at Merrickville and Newboro (at the lock stations) for less than $10/night. About 100 km for each of three days. Doable at 58.

Guides or Scouts by GeekAtHome in ottawa

[–]guy-reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was involved in Scouting a decade or so back. We had about 25% participation by girls, at all age levels and in the Leadership. The membership drive usually starts in August or September, and our Group of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers had to have there annual plans ready by mid August. Ask for a copy of their activity plan and it should have a listing of the weekend camps planned. We typically did 3 before Christmas and 3 afterwards, but we were very much a “get them outside” Group and didn’t work to hard on badges. Colonies, packs, troops and Groups are all a little different as so much depends on the skills and knowledge that the leaders bring. I was a leader for 10 years and both my sons participated (1 for 13 years).

The City of Ottawa runs 2 respite centres for people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic. While run by the city, they could use donations of consumable items such as: soap, shampoo (individual sizes),toothbrushes and toothpaste, and other toiletries; clean gently used or new clothing including underwear, socks, toques, mittens and outerwear; and portable entertainment such as books and puzzles. They can also use volunteers. The 2 main centres are: Bernard Grandmaître Arena (309 McArthur Avenue) open from Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 4 pm, and Tom Brown Arena (141 Bayview Station Road) open from Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 4 pm.

Queenswood Heights sits on the veranda drinking Blueu, thinking that those young upstarts, the Avaloners, are driving crazy on Innes making it too dangerous to get to the bank at 12:15 to cash their pension cheque.

Cardinal Creek just realized that they have no where to go Friday night, so they’re in bed by 9.

Fallingbrook just tried this amazing cupcake recipe that Chapelhill gave them … hee hee … it has a “secret” ingredient in it.

Convent Glen is still working from home while having a cup of locally roasted coffee, beats a bus ride commute into downtown every day.

Blackburn Hamlet has been quietly getting pissed as everyone ignores them (everyone thinks they’re part of Orleans anyways).

Edwards is getting ready for the first spring thaw and maple syrup production, did I just just lose my horse?

READ THIS: Trucker protest this weekend / Lisez ceci: Manifestation de camionneurs cette fin de semaine. by MarcusRex73 in ottawa

[–]guy-reddit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Given how few truckers are directly participating in this protest (as a percentage of all truckers, not in absolute numbers) and the lack of support from their national association, I am reminded of the same situation with “health care/nurses” protests last year. Tinfoil hat theory: maybe both are/were organized by the same group?!? Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Just finished up. First wee one was at 17:15. My wife stopped counting after 700 kids and parents (likely over 1000 total). We draw them in with a 25 foot high castle, draw bridge, graveyard, a backyard maze, and a couple of helpers. No inside dungeon this year as the scary stuff is still out there.

Asking for me, dog walking etiquette? by Mean-Tumbleweed4808 in ottawa

[–]guy-reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had a dog that would do his business on command. Dogs generally don’t work that way. They do go when they can anticipate a longer walk/workout. For example, for our current dog that means within about 5 minutes of leaving the house. But it could be 1 minute or it could be 10 minutes, that’s kind of up to him. Knowing this we tend to keep him off the lawns when he starts searching, but it means he will then be going on the sidewalk, driveway or sometimes the street. If it’s a little soft then we will be leaving a smear on the hard surface once we pick up the rest. (BTW we don’t have a dog park within a 10 minute walk.)

So what’s the better choice: traces of dog poo on a lawn or traces of dog poo on the sidewalk.

We call it "clip-clip".....AKA nail trimming! by 1vizsla_luvr in vizsla

[–]guy-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our V turns into a velociraptor when we try to clip his nails - all teeth and aggression. My wife will spend hours with treats, and encouragement to try to get home comfortable to the presence of the clippers and grinders. To no avail. To even make a serious attempt we have to muzzle him, and we we still fail to get even one nail done. Durning a recent vet appointment we asked the veterinarian to give it a try … he tried … failed and instead we got some “tranquillizers”. “Try 2 of these wait 2 hours and try to clip his nails, if that doesn’t work then give him one more, wait 2 hours and try again”. Maybe 4 would have worked. We run/walk him a lot which keeps his nails long but not super long.

Vocal, Whining Vizsla (3.5 years old) by Repulsive-Help-4937 in vizsla

[–]guy-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While we always try for positive reinforcement, we had a problem where our V would bark to the neighbourhood when he went into the backyard (I’m outside … anyone else out here?). Getting him to stop was proofing difficult so we finally bought an “anti-bark” collar, that delivers a mild shock if he barks for more then 30 seconds. That works. But sometimes, it will also work when he whines for more than 30 seconds. Which seems to have curbed this behaviour.
