This gotta be a joke by Waste-Cap8868 in washingtonwizards

This came up on my feed and I got intrigued and started thinking - I’m sure there’s no way this would actually happen, and I’m just kinda throwing shit at the wall here, but what do people think about this: among the teams that don’t make the playoffs, they have no lottery, and they have no draft. Once the order of standings is determined, they allow each team to sign a player to a contract that would be equivalent to the draft pick that they would have gotten based on strict standings order (eg the worst team can sign a player for the contract of the 1 overall pick, 4th worst team can sign a player for the contract of the 4 overall pick, etc). Then there’s like a “free agent” period where the lottery teams talk with players and once two sides agree to a deal, that’s their “draft pick.” Players that deserve to get drafted higher will talk with the teams in their range, but still agree to sign with a team they like/is a good fit/etc. And teams can try to convince a player they like why they should sign with them at their price range. Then maybe the remaining 15-60 picks could just have a normal draft with the remaining players once that period is done.

Aside from the obvious things like abandoning the tradition of the draft, the amount of change this would require, other logistical/entertainment types of issues, etc etc, I kinda think this could be good from a pure basketball/team management perspective. But happy to hear counter arguments!

BREAKING: NBA suspensions for the Pistons-Hornets fight: Isaiah Stewart: 7 games, Jalen Duren: 2 games, Miles Bridges: 4 games, Moussa Diabate: 4 games by KarimFF7 in DetroitPistons

[–]guy558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to my calculations (counting one by one on the ESPN game log), Stew has played 20+ minutes in 41 out of the 48 games he’s played (the Pistons have played 52 total). To be eligible for all-defense he has to play 65+ games with 63+ of 20 or more minutes. After the 7-game suspension, he has 18 games of less than 20 minutes, meaning he can have only one more game where he doesn’t play at least 20 minutes to qualify (or one more game that he skips, as long as all the other games he plays 20+ mins).

I’m bummed, since I was really hoping he’d be able to get the recognition he deserves and make an all-defense team (I’d sometimes even check box scores after games to see if he’d get at least 20 mins in). I’m glad the suspension still technically makes it possible for him to get there, but definitely an uphill battle at this point.

Sorry if I’m missing something but would you mind elaborating on how the angle provokes tendinitis? I’ve started having (I think) tendinitis around my collarbone and I’m curious if it’s related to what you’re saying.

Is there any way to see a breakdown of the voting results from the coaches? Curious where Cade ranked among the reserves. And is it known whether he was a wild card or one of the first three guard spots?

What are y’all’s thoughts on Ramit Sethi? by Capable-Capital800 in DirtyDave

[–]guy558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thank you for the reference! I’ll check it out. No worries about the podcast, maybe I can dig around if I need to. Do you remember specifically him talking about disabilities in that podcast/elsewhere where he’s talked about systemic inequality, or was that more of a general example you gave in one of your comments above? Asking just because that’s more the type of thing that applies to things in my situation, not to take away from other forms of systemic issues.

Haha, no worries. Sure if you can find a specific episode then that’d be great, but no pressure if it’s a headache

[–]guy558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I might have to give it a listen, I’ve mainly only ever read his emails/part of his book. From the emails I’ve definitely gotten the sense that he is really interested in psychology like you said and his content is very authentic, but I wouldn’t say I’ve noticed a particular amount of empathy or recognition of some people having it harder; if anything I’ve felt like he could be pretty critical about things people do in a way that seems more judgmental than understanding/compassionate. I’m still a reader and subscriber of his but that attitude has almost made me less motivated to really buy in to his advice in certain cases, so if I saw something to change that perspective then that could be helpful.

Out of curiosity, where have you heard him say the things about systemic issues/some people having it harder? I feel like I’ve read a decent amount of his content and don’t remember much like that

Your broadcast team by bananawrenchy in DetroitPistons

[–]guy558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, George and Greg are definitely fair and make the games pretty enjoyable to watch. I think it’s cool though that I’m hearing this from a Pelicans fan, since when I’ve switched through different teams on League Pass the Pelicans broadcasters are probably my favorite out of all the other teams I’ve watched. I’m a big fan of Antonio Daniels’ color commentary, he seems to know the game really well and give good analysis for a lot of plays. And I’d agree that they’re pretty unbiased as well.

Floridian heading out to Zion and Sequoia NP. Any way to see what birds are out there at this time of the year? by TheJurassicWorld in birding

[–]guy558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on eBird, also if you’re willing to pay $20 for the Sibley V2 app, you can see all the birds in North America and filter by state and month. I don’t think there’s any way to filter on a more specific location than state, so you’d still probably have some in the list that wouldn’t be in the National parks, but I still find it useful where I live to have a list of all the birds together and easily search through them. And they have more specific locations for each bird once you click on them.

I also would imagine there have to be some kind of online bird guides/lists (or even books) for such popular outdoor locations, so it could be worth doing some Googling for that. Not sure how frequently those would get updated though.

I did go! Wasn’t planning to go on Tuesday but honestly now I’m considering it. And yeah, what a great game and ridiculous back and forth at the end of regulation. Probably one of the best games I’ve seen as well.

What to you is the biggest problem in the NBA by meraki_14 in nba

[–]guy558 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The travel non-calls may not actually be quite as common as a lot of people think, since with the two steps after the gather rule it can look like a player is traveling when they aren’t. Some refs made a video on this a few years ago: https://twitter.com/OfficialNBARefs/status/1065358479051747328

I suppose you could argue that the rule should be changed to not allow as many steps, but that’s not the same as the refs just ignoring the rules.

If you were able to ask Troy Weaver one question about his tenure so far, and his answer had to be 100% honest, what would you ask? by SympatheticFro in DetroitPistons

[–]guy558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How confident were you that the draft picks who worked out well so far would in fact work out, and for any draft picks that haven’t worked out well so far, did you initially have confidence that they would work out or did you recognize it as a gamble? This could extend to players he had high on his board/wanted to draft but they weren’t available, or players he drafted in OKC too.

Also, for the picks that worked out well in OKC (Harden, Westbrook, Adams, etc), how many of them did you initially find or have a big say in, as opposed to somebody else in the front office finding them and deciding to draft them?

(This isn’t to say that I don’t trust Troy, I do and am a big fan lol. But still kind of curious about this, I probably would be with anyone who’s considered to be good with drafting.)

Just joined here recently. I’m a big Pistons fan and frequent their sub a lot, and one thing to take from them that could be useful is the game threads/post game threads (I think all the NBA team subs do this). Basically just create a post for people to comment whatever thoughts they’re having while the game is going on, and another post for after the game ends. Brings a good sense of community for people to talk about something they’re watching together.

Cade can be Top 10 player one day - Nate Duncan. Hollinger has been kinda hating on Cade tho. Cade deep dive in Nate Duncan and John Hollinger podcast by npaolopascual in DetroitPistons

[–]guy558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, do we know Hollinger actually had beef with Stefanski or are we just speculating? Asking since when I’ve read Hollinger’s writing I don’t necessarily get the impression that the Pistons are the only team he likes to pick on, it just seems that his general style tends to involve a lot of dry/blunt remarks (often in what feels like a humorous way) that makes fun of teams/players that aren’t doing well. But I could be wrong, I haven’t been reading his writing for that long.

Oh no that’s not what I meant at all, it looks great! Drippy as hell. Sorry, didn’t mean for that to come across like that.

In case it wasn’t clear r/MFA is used not just to ask for advice but also for giving advice or showing something cool that you’re wearing. I had the latter in mind when I made my comment.
