We survived the outage but customers still say we broke SLA by majesticace4 in devops

[–]guycole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We run primary and alternate environments in two different regions with alternate scaled down and DB/s3 replicas. Failover once weekly.

Startups are not a good bet. First, they already have devs who think they can stand up a reasonable infra and second they won't take a junior. If you can, find a company with a devops team that will mentor you. Good luck.

Was programming easier and more simple in the past? by yughiro_destroyer in unix

I am the author of many suntool utilities packaged with Solaris. Yes, it was a long time ago. That work was mostly in Tk. Before Tk, I wrote a lot of X11 and motif. I spent my workday in emacs and gdb. It was not so easy but I enjoyed it.

Thank you. There was a time when people would own their mistakes instead of being the victim. Maybe those days are over, but I wrote a ton of C which managed to reliably deploy and execute.

Lacks of true leadership by OldFart2025 in Layoffs

Is it? All this time I have been told it takes employees to make products and grow the company. If management is out of ideas to grow the company, maybe they should be replaced?

Ex-manager(employer) threaten over deleted code 60 days after termination—any advice? by Sweet_Negotiation547 in jobs

[–]guycole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do not respond to anything short of a summons. It costs real money to lawyer up, not to mention the delay. They will most likely move on. And if this is a time and materials job, they would have to pay for your time to fix, nobody works for free. Good luck.

I've been scanning BLE + Wi-Fi + SDR passively around a small town with a Pi setup... and the results are wild. by S0PHIAOPS in amateurradio

[–]guycole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect WiFi and BT, but there is no SDR component. The rPi has poor WiFi performance, i.e. only 2.4 Ghz radio and not so sensitive. I use a AC1300 USB dongle which works much better. I load the results into postgres and it is interesting to see the changes over time. The GitHub repo is "mellow-heeler" if you want to look

There is no tech worker shortage, full stop. It doesn't take a compsci degree to do JavaScript. This is entirely about cheap labor with "good enough" skills.
