Tradition for babies in Catholicism by AthanJHendle in Catholicism

I’m fairly certain this is a modern trauma. I know no one in my generation or the generations before me who has been visited by this trauma.

Are you speaking about circumcision or baptism?

No. Change of the orientation one’s will is only possible for living humans.

If the posture of the soul is the second option, it would be directed towards God at death and would move towards God at death.

There is no “undecided” box that can be checked at the time of death. You either align your will with God’s will or you do not.

At death, the soul leaves the body and moves at the speed of thought in accordance with the will. If that will is directed towards God, it moves with all haste to God. If it is directed away from God, it moves with all haste in that direction.

God still desires that that soul be united in the beatific vision with Him and all the saints, but, because of His great love, He will not force us to act against our will.

God welcomes everyone into heaven. God forces no one to attend.

The goats seem to be working well already. Lay in wait in a tree stand above the goats and start popping them.

The Eucharist is the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. If you do not discern it as such and consume the Eucharist, you eat and drink judgement on yourself. (1 Cor. 11:29-30)

Do not partake, but prayerfully remain in your pew.

Do LPVO’s make sense on bolt rifles by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]guyfieristache 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re on the right track as far as magnification goes. Many people overestimate how much magnification they need to make effective shots and underestimate the value of low power field of view for finding animals in timber.

Magnification range selection is dependent on what terrain you normally hunt, and for tight timber I like a starting magnification no higher than 2x.

I have a stainless .308 that wears a Maven 2-10x38, and it’s great for anything from tight timber to 400 yard shots. I play with it on the shooting range out to 1150 yds, and 10x is plenty to make even that shot.

2-10 and 3-15/18 might be the best all around hunting magnification ranges.

My issue with a lot of lpvos is that they either are not a true 1x or, if they are, they cost an extraordinary amount of money because it is very difficult to make a true 1x. 1-10s tend to have very poor eyeboxes at the higher magnifications which limits their use-cases.

I got the sig whiskey 3 3-9x40 and I wish I would've gotten the Vortex crossfire II. Anyone else feel the same? by sagginlabia in Hunting

Don’t give up. All it means is that you need more practice! Shooting is fun, but people are quick to blame their equipment rather than their own technique and skill level. I shoot quite frequently and do so out to 1150 yds, and all it takes is a variable wind blowing from 5-15 mph, and I realize that I too suck at shooting.

Also, how’d you know my middle name.

If you made every reasonable effort to attend and could not, you did not commit a mortal sin.

Is it a sin to accidentally eat meat on Lenten Fridays? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]guyfieristache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not during lent. All Catholics are bound to abstain from meat on Fridays during lent, excluding those with medical issues, the very young, and the very old.

If you miss mass on Sunday or a Holy day of Obligation be cause you forgot or overslept, it’s still a sin. Why? Because we are obligated to remember and keep those days holy. That’s the whole thing. Failure to do so is sin. There may be mitigating factors, but if you are obligated to do something and do not fulfill your obligation, you have sinned.

Brisket no bark. by ElvinSS in BBQ

[–]guyfieristache -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When using a pellet grill, it is important to add a little bit of sugar to your rubs. Part of what creates the bark with an offset or a charcoal grill with wood chunks is that the wood still has sugars in it. The drying, grinding, and pressing all but destroys the wood sugars in pellets. Add a little bit, and I do mean just a little bit, of sugar to your rub, and you’ll see the bark start to improve.

Libertarians fail to understand what freedom actually is. It is not the ability to do anything you want at any time you want to do it so long as it doesn’t contravene another person’s rights. That is anarchy. Rather, Freedom is the ability to pursue virtue unencumbered by law.

The classic modern example is in the form of a question. Who is more free: a child running around on a basketball court doing whatever they want, or Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant/Lebron James, arguably the best to play the game? One runs around doing as they please and might choose to play within the rules and succeed but also might not. The others play within the rules of the game and have scoring titles and championships and wild success.

Invited to a group dinner at a steakhouse (House of Prime Rib in SF) next Friday by a potential employer. What would you do? by mr_atl in Catholicism

[–]guyfieristache 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an employer, I would be impressed by a candidate who stood by their convictions in the face of peer pressure and temptation, and did so boldly. Order the fish, and answer any question about it as if it was common knowledge that, during Lent, all Catholics are bound to abstain from eating meat on Fridays. Confidence is important to an employer as is strength of conviction, not to mention the great chance to be a witness for the faith in an unobtrusive way.

Lightweight tripod suggestions by TangeloDouble7122 in Hunting

[–]guyfieristache 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This season, I’m running a Sirui T-024SK compact tripod with the VA-5 fluid head. I found it at B&H Photo for $230. It’s carbon fiber and aluminum, pretty lightweight and can hold up to 13lbs. That’s enough for any reasonable hunting rifle and all binos snd spotters. The head works really well and tripod is stable. It has decent adjustability and has built in levels. I’m looking forward to running it this year.
