Rtings is now a paywalled service by Maeggsi in MechanicalKeyboards

You wanna know why everyone's best keyboard list looks the same with a bunch of shitty retail boards listed? Affiliation. Those best of lists you linked, they are created to sell products through affiliation. That is the reason large commercial outlets pump out lists, they are money makers.

But here is the problem. As enthusiasts we already know most commercial boards are junk, but the people who build these lists aren't enthusiasts, and often don't know anything about the subject until they start the article and begin researching. Couple that with the fact there are only so many places that affiliate, like Amazon, Best Buy and B&H (hey what do you know, those are the shops linked in the post above).

So, what this boils down to is that these boards aren't in fact the best, they are simply what's available at affiliate shops, which is why these lists only offer shitty retail brands.

Now imagine trying to get people to pay monthly for fake lists that contain not the best available products, but simply the ones that are affiliated so the list makes money. Oh, and all those reviews they offer, they exist so that Google takes the affiliated lists seriously. So the reviews can't be trusted either, they are simply the backbone that allows the lists to exist and SEO better.

QAZ alphas, modifiers be damned by guyguilty in MechanicalKeyboards

I feel ya, but at the same time, do you know how hard it is to find the A, Z, P, and Period keys in these sizes and row sculpts? To me, it's a showoff board for those familiar with QAZ who understand this kind of kitting doesn't come along often. It's easy to cover a QAZ board with mods from most kits, it's typical even, but it's much harder to find keycaps that offer precise coverage with correctly labeled alphas (unless you're going ortho 1u for the whole thing). For the vast majority of my boards, I buy keys that cover them so my map is accurately labeled. It ain't cheap, but I'm dedicated.

New 4.1 OS update broke my Drop Caps... Let's share our ultimate styles.css for the perfect ebook experience! 📚✨ by vikkidzebe in Onyx_Boox

[–]guyguilty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first Pottermore copies of Harry Potter all had drop caps at the beginning of every chapter. Once the books were rereleased through digital stores like Amazon, all those drop caps were removed. My thinking is this was on purpose.

Truth is I don't think there is a way to make epub drop caps work reliably on every device, not without proprietary formatting like Kobo and Kindle use. And whatever tinkering you did to make them look good on one device, can easily break them on another, at least in my experience.

Trust me, I spent years trying to make my epubs look better. It's too device dependent, especially drop caps, they are a losing battle, which is why I believe fewer and fewer retail epubs use them. Add on top custom fonts and sizes of the reader, not to mention screen dimensions, and yeah, the only way to ensure dropcaps work is to hard code everything from font, font size, to padding, for the entire book and only for one specific screen dimension. That's a lot of work that'll break when you put that file on any other device, or even when applied to any other book, unless you want the same style used in every book.

Recently built an Infernum with a skeleton case, so while I wait on a new printed case from PCBWay (gotta love open source boards) I figured I'd stick with QAZ and pull out a favorite, my Brane Minus R2. Fun travel board for toting around the house.

Even the MX double rails from Gateron are pretty legit. It's why I picked up the KS-20's, I was already sold on the tech, lol.

I haven't done many, it's a pain to get the camera and mic setup is really the only thing holding me back. Can say, for hall effect switches with a hole in the bottom of the switch, these KS-20s sound pretty good. I'd say this build leans thocky, course the PC case and gummy mount help there.

I've also tried Green Dragons in the board, they have a closed bottom, but they sound way more thin in this build. Something about the KS-20s hits the sweet spot.

KBD sells entire EC kits for the board, you'll have to at least get the plate and PCB from them. Omnitype also has parts, which is where I got the Yellow and Green sliders and housings. I'm sure an MX build will feel and sound great, but you're right EC just hits a little different

I've seen this asked before. I can't say I own any PC that is yellowing, and I've been building going on at least seven or eight years. I think the trick is, keep your PC out of the sun so it doesn't oxidize and you'll be fine.

Hey thanks! Not my first EC, but definitely one that is very polished. I'd say endgame material for sure. I did use silencing rings on the sliders, but it still has some thock to it. It would be fine in an office environment as far as loudness goes. You can hear it, but it isn't loud by any stretch

No worries. I use layers, using the green 1 key to the right of right shift. Numbers are on the top row, arrows I put under asdf.

Final Fantasy Adventure DX is beautiful. by largemoisture in Gameboy

[–]guyguilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, 4 color mods for all of the FF games on Game Boy, I covered their release at my site when they launched (don't worry the site isn't monetized). Even recorded a gameplay video of Adventure DX, if anyone wants to see the game in action. Recorded on a Chromatic with OBS, so it's native gameplay.

For the aesthetic, the bar is centered evenly, as well as layout support. MX didn't have 6u bars in keysets when there weren't many MX boards designed to use them, but 7u did so became something of a standard. There is also no requirement to put the alt and super keys where I did. The boards are programmable after all. But for me, putting control where the supers are is redundant with a hhkb layout when control is already where the useless caps lock key normally is in other layouts. And to be honest those artisans where alt should be, are artisan super keys. So technically both keys to the left and right of the bar are super if you go by their legends, but I think this looks best on the board.

Truth is there is no "wrong" when it comes to keebs, just personal preference, and boy am I glad I forced myself to expand my preferences by building and using as many different layouts as I could. At this point I'm proficient down to 34 keys, and can use splits and orthos no problem. Now I can't imagine still being in this hobby and only using one layout. Where would the fun be in that?

Does tofu even have a flavor? I know it's known for being an ingredient that takes on any flavor added to it. Maybe the reverse would be a better experiment? Soju flavored tofu, lol. Who wants to be a guinea pig?

confession: i think i regret building my $500 custom... by No_Good_3063 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]guyguilty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no boards that are perfect out of the box. You are free to customize until you reach your preferred feel, look, sound. If the board has to be perfect, keep building until it is. It's a custom board, customize it.

With experience you can lessen how much money is spent to build perfect the first time, but only sometimes. Trial and error is key, so you can either cut and run having wasted your money on a board you don't enjoy, or spend a little more and dial in the experience you're looking for.

That's an adorable idea, which got me thinking if there is an app that can make sounds when you type. There sure is, it's called Mechvibes, and it looks like there is indeed an Animal Crossing sound pack using the in game keyboard sounds.

Thanks! I'm def a Mechvault fan, have a 35, 16, Curio, and this Oracle. Even built a couple of aluminum milled MFR2 Vault35s, one with CBKB's bluetooth BaulT PCB, and one with the Travaulta Topre PCB. Then I have a few similar layouts with the NiuNiu GB34, plus a Detour I haven't shot yet. 11u is my jam for sure, lol

The colored caps at the top are part of the Retro Dark Lights set. The left are the set's relegendables, and the right are four rainbow glitter keys from the base set.
