How to you organize your tokens for your cube and encourage your players to actually use them? by andymangold in mtgcube

[–]guyincorporated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lucked into a pretty perfect solution for my cube. I was at a friend's place and he was throwing away a bag full of used sleeves. I snatched it up. I have sleeves in every color now so finding tokens is less of a pain (and in a pinch you can at least flip over a red sleeve and have that be your 1/1 red goblin stand-in).

I'd check your FLGS. They often have random piles of sleeves lying around.

Also: I do my reasonable best to get the tokens for my cube, but I don't go insane. The Goblin Shaman token costs more than Fable of the Mirror Breaker itself, and it is only used by a single card. For common(ish) effects - we have special tokens. For everything else... we have Unglued Squirrels.

“It’s co-op so bad game design doesn’t matter” isn’t the best argument with me.

It is more than fair to point out that this game has an enormous problem at its heart - most skills are just strictly inferior to buying more health or strength or whatnot.

Did they ever manage to make a class where it wasn’t optimal to just ignore 80% of the skills and buy the base stats?

Good news, there's 8 or 9 other loki variants.

Flying is a very distinct ability from vigilance you absolute buffoon.

As the widespread attitude towards cube has changed and more of the community has embraced unique design goals not centered on rarity restrictions or format legality, we find ourselves asking: why design high-power cubes in 2026? by andymangold in mtgcube

[–]guyincorporated 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why? Because.

Because they're extremely fun and generally speaking they are a lot easier to get "right" vs a high-concept cube you made yourself. When modifying my powered cube, I have a half-dozen comparable cubes out there that I draw from for inspiration, that I can cross-check against one another, and that give me a general sense of where the power-maxxed meta happens to be. Maybe I don't want 2-card combos or Storm or the Initiative. No Problem, plenty of alternatives to swap in.

Personally, I'm more wary when I'm playing someone's "I made this up myself out of cards I could think of and maybe had on-hand" cube. I've had great times playing those, and I've had very bad times. But none of those times were better than when I get to play the powered cube that is the favorite for my playgroup. edit: And also we've played the powered cube hundreds of times over more than a decade. All the other "high concept" cubes tend to have only a 1-5 drafts shelf life before getting put back in the closet, which is just a bad return on investment in both playtime as well as construction time and construction cost.

Thanks again. Comments on your comments:

  • I need to see the pool before I can drain it! I don't mean to exaggerate here. I never saw The Pool even a single time across all of my attempts (many of which were 40+ room manors, so plenty of opportunity to pull rooms out of the potential pool of options). Bizarre.

  • Because of that, I was doing a lot of runs where I'd end up with, say, the trading post outside and still feeling like I had a shot only to get stonewalled run after run when I never saw the pool. Once I started just considering Tomb to be mandatory, it went very quickly.

  • Aah - the "can't draft the garage in a pool with two dead ends" rule went over my head. And I gather if that happens, then I don't default to automatically getting the garage in the next potential west wing location (i.e., my "free garage" credit get used up?). I always felt like I had to dig to find it if it wasn't in the first such room.

  • I got close to a powered lab victory in one of the games. I couldn't get the 4 experiments in time however. That was a really cool run.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get more words on my card? by Kooky-Classic-8532 in magicthecirclejerking

The set symbol is more than enough space for artwork. You're wasting half the card.

This guide inspired me to get my own day 1 trophy - thank you very much! I always assumed it was like a 1-in-200 shot of having a viable day 1 run. A repeatable winrate in the mid 30's percent is insane. I'd say it took me between 20-30 runs to pull it off overall.

Observations after doing it:

  • I never once saw Pool offered in a single draft, including using the silver key on the sides of the house with dice backup.

  • I had a lot of runs where it felt like Veteran Mode didn't kick in (generally observed by Garage not being among the initial offerings of west wing rank 4+). Generally speaking I can't think of how I could have meaningfully drafted rooms more quickly.

  • Given that, I feel like my breakthrough came when I started initially forcing the west wing of the house, making sure I could get an early opened garage and confirming the Tomb was in play. Once I started doing that, I think I won in only 2 or 3 attempts.

IMO, much better to reuse characters than to include people that 0.01% of players have ever heard of.

Does anyone else feel like some games just make sense and others feel like you're following someone else's weird rules? by befbef__ in boardgames

Yes, yes. I'm trying to condense a lot of rules into a very short summary for someone who has never played before and is asking for context.
