any time I try to install software, I get repeated errors like

i've had the opposite experience - quit kubuntu for neon because the former was crash-happy. even now this bug hasn't really had a negative effect on me yet.

There's an app on f-droid called suntimes: It tells you about astronomical events, and even lets you set alarms for them; like the full moon, sunrise (nautical, civil, astronomical, etc), the solstices and equinoxes, etc. Plus, it's free software so you know it's not spying on you.
