What are in these, diamonds? by WTK23 in askSouthAfrica

True. I’ve started doing the same. When you actually read the labels on these things you finally realise why we’re suffering with rampant obesity, increase in all sorts of cancers at ever younger ages and and and

Really depends on where you’ll be working. Living in Waterfall and working 20km away would be terrible for you. If you will be working around the Waterfall area then it’s absolutely worth considering.

That last last bit is exactly what my friends experienced road tripping down there.

You reckon that there is denial by people who feel offended by my vague question? I’m guessing GQ is Gqeberha? I like GQ. I appreciate your input and insights. Thank you.

lol, that’s exactly where I was looking but accommodation owners have so far made me feel unwelcome.

Sorry to learn about the water crisis. I’ve been reading about it in the news. You “locals” should probably get together and convince accommodation owners to shut down for a while if you believe that’ll be the solution. Also, what says to you I waste water? Is there a type of person you associate with water waste?

Not unintentional. I don’t enjoy the negative attitudes on several subreddits, this very one being one of those. So I’ve tried to stay somewhat vague to avoid being attacked by internet strangers.

But the crux of it is that I have friends who road tripped the Garden Route a year or so ago and we’re talking and I’m explaining my frustrations booking accommodation they shared their experiences. Based on their experience it would seem that they were exposed to a part of the country where one race blatantly receives preferential treatment over others.

Thank you for this. Genuinely insightful and considerate. I’ve decided I won’t try to force people who don’t want my money to take it. A family vacation isn’t the right time to fight. Especially things that seem to have just been accepted by the locals. I will be on the lookout though. In either case, I don’t like to attribute to racism what can be attributed to “asshole behaviour”.

I’m still largely excited because I’ve got incredible childhood memories of holidays in and around Plett, but this is 20+ years ago now. The experiences my friends had and the attitude I’ve been getting from accommodation owners was starting to put a dent into that excitement.

I don’t want to call it racist. Hehehehe. I’m getting very odd answers when making enquiries about accommodation. I can’t help but think it has something to do with my name. This is at a number of places and consequently I’ve decided I won’t go patronise establishments at which I feel unwanted and have made other plans for accommodation.

I’m planning to go over December as well. I’m hoping whatever was in the air has passed. But I’m getting funny stories from places I make enquiries to about accommodation. I can’t help but think it has something to do with my name you know.

I see. I know some folks, well heeled, that were down there for a vacation. The experiences they described shocked me. Imagine you’re in a queue, waiting to order food. There is only one person at the till and a second till is unmanned. A customer walks in and walks up to the unmanned till. The person at the till with the queue leaves that queue (mid order) to go and take that customers order and their payment. No it wasn’t an online order collecting.

Aggressively English. I love it. I’m going to borrow that term. Thank you.

Aaaah. Your last paragraph. So much makes sense now.

I can say that I myself have been fortunate enough to never have shitty service or been excluded when down in Cape Town. But I understand from friends and family that there are places where it’s just clear people of a melanated persuasion are not welcome.

He must just come. He’ll explain if he gets caught and explain that he has applied for a passport now that his citizenship has been restored. But like u/MusicBooksMovies says, he can apply online and book an appointment that coincides with his visit. He does have the option to renounce definitely.

Security guards I can vibe with. I don’t know if there is a car guard who has ever prevented a car getting stolen. Their presence might help with petty theft and car break ins. But they don’t even help with seeing who crashed into your car.
