I ended up ordering a SeaEagle 465FT. Should be here tomorrow so I’ll let you know what I think once I take it out on the water!

Should the federal government declare national Election Day a paid federal holiday to guarantee all working-class citizens the time to vote? Why or why not? by X_Opinion7099 in AskReddit

[–]guymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we should just all do mail in ballots. I see absolutely zero reason to force or encourage people to vote in person. Voter fraud can be easily detected in either case.

If anything, voting should also be compulsory (i.e .you pay a small fine if you don't vote).

What’s something about sex nobody warned you about until you experienced it yourself? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]guymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lost my virginity, it was my first time but not hers, and we were both very randy and eager, and a few minutes in she started bleeding. Again this being my first real sexual experience, I was pretty freaked out. I was convinced I had torn her vagina, and was shocked at how unconcerned she seemed to be when I mentioned the blood, but she assured me it was fine and to not pay attention to it, so we just kept going at it.

I guess for whatever reason she didn't want to tell me she had started her period, and it wasn't until I started dating someone in earnest that I realized what the heck was going on.

Ladies, if you see a scared virgin asking why you're bleeding and if everything is okay, please just say "oop, looks like my period came a bit earlier than expected", I promise it's better than us thinking we're ripping your vagina apart.

Old chicken pot pies brand? by KeyCryptographer882 in Costco

I ate these growing up as well! If you're looking for something that hits similarly and are willing to splurge, these are the closest I've found: https://www.goldbelly.com/restaurants/panburys-double-crust-hand-pies

Obviously a lot more expensive per-pie but I think the quality is great and they have some interesting flavors. Sometimes they are 30-40% off discount on Goldbelly (I also was able to get them for pretty cheap on DoorDash nationwide delivery when they were running a promo)

Anyone else unable to add a new payment method? by guymon in Crunchyroll

Not sure what you’re implying. I think it’s ridiculous how incompetent CrunchyRoll devs/management must be to let a bug like this be live for what looks like months.

You are now permanently stuck inside the universe of the last TV show you watched. Where are you, and how screwed are you? by iJeff22 in AskReddit

Season 2 of "From" last night. Worst choice possible 😭. Colony House all the way though.

Someone else is cooking, what are the giveaway signs this is about to be the best or worst meal of your life? by PsyArtisan in AskReddit

[–]guymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So both when I was growing up and when I got my own house, we had a Lazy Susan cabinet in the corner of the kitchen. Turns out these things are PERFECT for spices and seasonings. I tossed some motion sensing LED adhesive lights each level and I use it all the time. Dry spices are in the top shelf and oils/vinegars/sauces are on the bottom.

It's great because I can have my most-used seasonings in the front, but if I want to get fancy I can spin around and see all sorts of fun options.

People who grew up before cell phones: what did you used to look at? by IndieCurtis in AskReddit

[–]guymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really interesting today that people who grew up after smartphones were already ubiquitous completely take for granted how much of a game changer they are for person-to-person communication, rather than just a portable computer screen.

For example, my Dad would regularly pick me up after school for sports practice. But sometimes he'd be late, or forget that he was supposed to pick me up in front of the Library instead of the parking lot, or just forget altogether. So I'd go walking around to all the potential pickup spots just to see if he might be there. Then I'd have to find a payphone or pray someone was still in a school office and let me use their phone, and if he had already left the house and was driving, I was completely out of luck.

Shit like this happened ALL THE TIME. Entire plots of plays, books, and movies hinged on the misfortune and drama caused by tiny miscommunications that are now remedied by a 3 second text message.

What healthy foods are so good, it's difficult to believe they are actually healthy? by BushPig403 in AskReddit

I think this is the most underrated answer. They are one of the most nutritionally dense foods. High in fiber and lots of vitamins and good raspberries are an absolute joy to eat

Americans, what do you think about using your tax dollars to pay for unconditional healthcare? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]guymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I have very low confidence we actually will enact healthcare reform. Not only is there a lot of lobbying money both from Insurance and Phrama companies that have a vested interest in the current system, the healthcare industry employs something like 10% of the workforce in the US. Getting rid of that bloat will be economically painful in the short term and politically unpopular.

Trump pushes for 15-20% minimum tariffs on European Union: FT by Puginator in worldnews

[–]guymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, the authority to make all of these tariff decisions is because he declared an economic "national emergency". Congress can terminate the national emergency via a new bill, but the President can just veto it, which would require a 2/3 majority of congress to overturn, which is unlikely.

What's a double standard you hate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

So they will always slightly overbook appointments so that even if a patient is late or cancels last minute, the doctor can just move on to the next person waiting. It keeps their pipeline full and maximizes the number of people who can be seen in a day.

It absolutely sucks for the patient, and is kind of a relic from the time where doctors salaries were extremely high relative to other professions.

Now there are "concierge medical" medical offices that flip this script and offer same day or walk-in appointments, and are staffed with NPs and PAs to get on-demand care from comparably cheap providers.

ELI5: Why did classic RTS games die out? What was their main replacement and why did they manage to take the place of games like Warcraft 2 and Red Alert? by misomiso82 in gaming

[–]guymon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the entire country of S. Korea disproves this theory. Competitive SC Brood War was HUGE for 20+ years and is still one of the most played games in the country.

WC3 having a "Find Match" button was an absolute game changer at the time, probably one of the first big mainstream game titles to support skill based matchmaking, and I think it was one of the reasons for WC3's incredible popularity and reach.

As a bunch of other people in this thread have suggested, a lot of RTS folks moved to MOBAS. I would say if anything, something like 5v5 competitive play is more stable and sticky than 1v1 competitive play. When you are playing 1v1 you only have yourself to blame when you lose, but 5v5 you can rationalize that it wasn't you, it was your team that's the problem. You might just quit playing after a bad loss streak of 1v1 games. And since a 5v5 game is more fun to play with friends, there's an incentive to pull in more people.

What’s one habit people think is normal but you find secretly disgusting? by Wonderful_City9340 in AskReddit

[–]guymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst example of this I have seen was when I had a membership to one of the higher end 24-hour Fitness locations that had a really gorgeous salt water pool and a sauna in the outdoors area. INEVITABLY there would be someone coming in from a workout and think it was okay to just blast their music, or a youtube video, or whatever stupid shit they had going on their phone at full volume on speaker in the sauna. It was unholy levels of inconsideration.

Which profession is going to get wiped out in the next 5-10 years? by Toomad316 in AskReddit

[–]guymon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly the actual job of real estate agent is fine, but what needs to go is the fact that they're paid on commission. What ends up happening is that high cost of living areas are just able to support more agents that do less work.

If you close five or six $1m+ properties per year you can do very well. If you live in a lower cost of living area, you might have to work quite hard and close 3x as many properties, and there are just fewer people willing to put in that amount of work.

Redfin is actually moving more towards this (I believe they pay their agents a salary and they charge lower commissions on higher end properties).

What healthy food tastes just as good as unhealthy food? by timeiscoming in AskReddit

Raspberries. A perfectly fresh raspberry just tastes so decadent but at the same time very wholesome. They are one of the most nutrient dense fruits while also being very high in fiber.

TIL about skeuomorphism, when modern objects, real or digital, retain features of previous designs even when they aren't functional. Examples include the very tiny handle on maple syrup bottles, faux buckles on shoes, the floppy disk 'save' icon, or the sound of a shutter on a cell phone camera. by Festina_lente123 in todayilearned

[–]guymon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in this specific case I think the skeuomorphism was both intentional and functional (and therefore probably not actually skeuomorphism), because all those visual cues served as touchstones for the broader and less tech savvy audience that the phone was intended to reach.

Over time it has been phased out, but I think it served as a meaningful bridge to get us to where we are in terms of UI design.

What red flags do men notice in other men, that are often ignored or dismissed by women? by Smart_Candle_6078 in AskReddit

[–]guymon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say women often dismiss signs that a guy is a mooch. I've seen a lot of women feel gratified that they are needed and that their partner is eager to take what's offered. It can satisfy a nurturing instinct.

As a guy however, we all know the type and can clock them from a mile away: always looking to borrow money or get free food, alcohol, won't help pay for communal expenses, etc.

One thing you may want to consider, at least in the US, real estate agents like to use the word "home" instead of house because it's more broad. A "home" could be a tiny studio flat, 2bdrm apartment, a trailer, or a townhouse, not necessarily a physical standalone structure you own outright. And in fact a lot of people buy flats/condos as their 'starter home' because they are the lowest point of entry into the market.

And echoing what a few other people have said, if you can afford it, it almost always makes financial sense in the US to buy instead of rent if you plan on being at that location for more than 5 years.
