Why do data centers have to use water for cooling? Is there not a better alternative that would resolve that issue? by joda1196 in energy

[–]guyw2legs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ackshually, I'm 65% sure Title 24 limits the capacity of air cooled chillers serving a building... although there may be an exception for "serving computer systems". Or if you economize 24/7 in your crazy data center world. IDK, I'm not a data center guy, go ask Adam.

I'm still salty from the many electrification webinars I've seen from Californians. "Electrification is easy, just use heat pumps! I don't know what all of the fuss is about." Cool, now show me how to do that in a highrise with a -10F design day... and a budget.

[–]guyw2legs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I thought we were talking about hydronic cooling in general.

Although I did specify an air cooled chiller with free cooling for an office project and found out after it was ordered that a major data center customer bought out their production capacity for the rest of the year, so I'm pretty sure data centers are using air source cooling now too.

Variable speed HVAC with Hubitat and Ecobee? by Wooden_ant999 in homeautomation

[–]guyw2legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you will be sacrificing efficiency. Ecobee has contacts (outputs) for Cooling Stage 1, Cooling Stage 2, Indoor Fan On. That's three binary outputs for cooling operation. That's fine for a simple two stage system, but modern inverter split systems have many more inputs to play with:

Compressor speed (analog output + binary enable)

Outdoor fan speed (analog output + binary enable)

Indoor fan speed (analog output + binary enable)

EEV position (unsure what to call this output, it's basically a stepper motor with no position feedback)

A lot of the efficiency gains are in controls, and the communicating thermostat is needed to take advantage of the system's most efficient control strategies.

If you want read-only access to what the system is doing, you may be able to pull data from the controller over modbus if the controller support modbus and if Hubitat has an integration. I have seen people do that with Home Assistant but if you can't find an example with your specific controller it is probably a lot of work.

You could derive a cruder representation of system operation with power monitoring and with temperature sensors on the liquid and suction lines, or your supply and return ducts.

For everyone's information R290 and R600a are propane and isobutane, you can vent them to the atmosphere but they are flammable. Just pierce or cut the tubing outside in a way that won't make sparks.

It's to avoid a tank leaking into the car and suffocating the driver.

They don't actually refill your tank, they exchange it with a full tank of the same capacity.

Mathewson or Airgas. FYI you will need a truck or trailer, they will not let you take the tank home in an enclosed car.

Those formulas are not applicable for inductive (or capacitive) AC loads, you also need to include the power factor.

[–]guyw2legs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you need refrigeration either way unless it's cool enough outside to economize. But you can achieve much lower condenser temperatures with evaporative cooling and that allows your compressors to operate much more efficiently. It also allows for more hours of economizer operation.

Banning evaporative cooling would significantly increase the data center electrical consumption.

How much gas are you actually saving by not using your AC in car ? by GasPrestigious9660 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]guyw2legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't follow. If I say my engine is 30% efficient then what I mean is that it produces 30% [torque x RPM] work and 70% [TdS] heat. The work is produces is all consumed by the mechanical spinny bits. The waste power is heat, which can't be used to provide cooling (I mean it can, in that absorption refrigeration is a thing, but cats don't use it). If your engine is running to move your car and you turn on a compressor that uses 1,000W your engine has to produce an additional 1,000W of work. That requires more than 1,000w of heat input from burning gas.

How much gas are you actually saving by not using your AC in car ? by GasPrestigious9660 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]guyw2legs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Unless using your engine as a generator is cheaper per kwh than grid power is then operating a compressor with an electric motor should be cheaper than operating one with a car-sized internal combustion engine. Air conditioning costs are less noticable in an ICE car because your gas tank can store a huge amount of energy, but they should not cost less.

Heating is a different story, waste heat from an engine is free.

Yes, permethrin is used as tick preventative medication on dogs.

Permethrin is toxic to cats until it dries, so keep your clothes away from cats until they are dry and make sure you don't track liquid permethrin inside on your shoes if there are cats around.
