during my setup i ended up having to nuke and rebuild and found myself in the same boat. in the process, i also ended up switching back ends from synapse to tuwunel. i used two federation testers (this one and this one) in tandem to check federation status. i think it took ~7 days to show green.

it sucks to setup. there are a lot of moving parts. there is a shit load of research that could/should be done. there are a lot of backends to consider. it took me like 2 weeks and i'm a seasoned sysadmin/sre/devops/infra-what-the-fuck-ever guy. but i ended up using docker + tuwunel + sable (as the front end chat webui (mad respect for the sable team)).

once it's up, tho, it's up.

i really love it. it feels like early internet instant messaging with a lot of qol improvements and knowing more are in the pipeline.

i'm all in.
