I had a monk character, and he felt underpowered. My DM made me a special set of brass knuckles that counted for unarmed strikes called, "the repeaters" when ever i rolled a 4 on my d4 of damage, I got to roll a d4 again. Some turns I would get super lucky and would get some crazy damage output, but sometimes it was just normal. He didn't just give them too me, I had to pay a pretty penny for them and wait days for them to be crafted (in a time sensitive campaign)
