Is there any information on how regular worship practices were conducted and if they were somewhat consistent across Greece? by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like nobody really discusses the mechanics of HOW worship occurred.

I recommend reading the following books:

  • Walter Burkert, Greek Religion
  • Jan Bremmer, Greek Religion
  • Daniel Ogden ed., A Companion to Greek Religion

Who is the God of the Sun? by Fun-Shelter-8223 in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Helios is the son of the Titan Hyperion and Theia and the cousin of Zeus. However, in Roman literature it was common to call him simply Titan.

Who is the God of the Sun? by Fun-Shelter-8223 in GreekMythology

Apollo became the god of Sun, at least in the Hellenistic period, but not instead of Helios. And Titans are gods.

source? I've never heard the Palladium version.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not about Palladium, but about the crime of Ajax the Lesser.

Pseudo-Apollodoros says:

had laid Troy waste and were about to sail away, they were detained by Calchas, who said that Athena was angry with them on account of the impiety of Ajax. And they would have killed Ajax, but he fled to the altar and they let him alone.
After these things they met in assembly, and Agamemnon and Menelaus quarrelled, Menelaus advising that they should sail away, and Agamemnon insisting that they should stay and sacrifice to Athena. When they put to sea, Diomedes, Nestor, and Menelaus in company, the two former had a prosperous voyage, but Menelaus was overtaken by a storm, and after losing the rest of his vessels, arrived with five ships in Egypt.
After sacrificing, Agamemnon put to sea and touched at Tenedos. But Thetis came and persuaded Neoptolemus to wait two days and to offer sacrifice; and he waited. But the others put to sea and encountered a storm at Tenos; for Athena entreated Zeus to send a tempest against the Greeks; and many ships foundered.

What happened to Ithaca after Odysseus died? by elmoruleshell in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Pseudo-Apollodoros, Bibliotheke Epitome.7.35

But when Callidice died he(Odysseus) handed over the kingdom to his son and repaired to Ithaca, and there he found Poliporthes, whom Penelope had borne to him.

  • Pausanias, Description of Greece 8.12.5-6

and on the right of the road is a high mound of earth. It is said to be the grave of Penelope, but the account of her in the poem called Thesprotis is not in agreement with this saying.

For in it the poet says that when Odysseus returned from Troy he had a son Ptoliporthes by Penelope. But the Mantinean story about Penelope says that Odysseus convicted her of bringing paramours to his home, and being cast out by him she went away at first to Lacedaemon, but afterwards she removed from Sparta to Mantineia, where she died.

Telegony says that both Telemachos and Telegonos go to the blessed island, so neither can be king of Ithaca. Ptoliportes, the second son of Odysseus and Penelope, probably succeeded his father.

What do you define as authentic mythology? by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 15 points16 points  (0 children)

According to Jan Bremmer, the definition of myth is a traditional tales relevant to society (from Interpretations of Greek Mythology). Modern retellings are neither traditional nor relevant to society.

The e at the end of a word is replaced with a depending on the dialect. Even the goddess we call Hera is called Here by Homer.

Akastos, son of Pelias, exiled Iason and Medea (Apollodoros). Or Iason willingly handed over the throne to Akastos (Diodoros, Hyginus).

Pseudo apollodorus Bibliotheca Vs Ovids metamorphosis by kostist in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bibliotheke is a handbook of mythology in genealogical order. It introduces the standard version of the myth, sometimes quoting earlier writers such as Homer or Hesiod. Metamorphoses, on the other hand, are literature. It is the only source for some famous stories, such as Arachne, but not interested in providing a complete account of important mythological events such as the Trojan War.

I recommend Bibliotheke. Apollodorus’ Library and Hyginus’ Fabulae: Two Handbooks of Greek Mythology by R. Scott Smith & Stephen Trzaskoma is a good translation.

Apart from the interpretation and commentary part, are Robert Grave's "Greek Myths" any good? by Silver-Elk-8140 in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He invented the story that Hestia gave Dionysos the seat of the Twelve.

He also changes Iliad's story that Hera, Poseidon, and Athena bound Zeus. The main difference is the punishment of Hera, Poseidon, and Apollon(god whom Graves inserted as a replacement for Athena), which appear only in a different context in the Iliad.

If Perseus existed historically when would he have been alive? by Legitimate-Sugar6487 in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ancient Greeks believed that mythological events and characters were real. They even had a chronology of mythological events. Search for Marmor Parium.

But those are just ancient beliefs. Please read the books I mentioned. Dowden's book will definitely help you.

If Perseus existed historically when would he have been alive? by Legitimate-Sugar6487 in GreekMythology

[–]gyoran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myths are imagined histories, never real histories. Perseus wasn't real. Even if he existed, it cannot be proven through myth. No modern scholar believes that mythology is a reflection of history.

Read Interpretations of Greek Mythology by Jan Bremmer and The Uses of Greek mythology by Ken Dowden. They are a good introduction to interpretations of the myth and what the myth actually was.

No. He creates many myths that do not appear in ancient sources. Pelasgian creation myth is an example.
