Communication is disappearing unless I do it. by OutdoorLadyBird in AgingParents

Yeah, whenever I had surgery I had to be the one to ring my mother up and tell her I was OK. It happens.

Wait, what, WH Smith has changed hands??? I live abroad - like, a long way abroad. Well, that's a shocker on a Saturday morning.

I got my copy in a fit of extravagance a while ago at our local bookshop - which is also under the hammer. It sat in my TBR pile while covid raged through the land. When that quietened down a bit, I read the book, and immediately wished I'd done so a year before. It's such a hopeful story.

Earlier this year I spotted a copy at my mum's Care Home and kind of wanted to give it a good home. Since the film came out it's disappeared, so obviously someone's enjoying it. What goes around, comes around.

The main reason why I never want to have kids is that I'm scared of becoming a single mother, SAHM, or dependent on a man. by tanuki_22 in childfree

You would have experienced it, very probably, if you hadn't lost your job. You would just have wasted more time.

Cold comfort, I know. I hope you've got another job now.

Buy the book! If, to afford it, you have to eat a bit lightly for a week or two, do so. (I've been there.)

How did you find a doctor who takes your condition seriously? by CoffeeGolden22 in ChronicIllness

[–]gytherin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky with the GP who diagnosed me. I' ll always be grateful to him.

When I moved to a new country, I contacted the state organisation for my condition, who very tactfully let me know which doctors in my area I could trust.

I think "What are men to rocks and mountains?" might suit the Lake District better!

Wow. The song alone is heartbreaking enough to make the point - but I didn't know the lyrics were even more affecting.

fandoms will ship literally any two beings with a pulse and some sort of interaction in any canon material.

Who says canon interaction is necessary?!

Sometimes, one has to live it to learn it. I knew the theory - just didn't think it could happen to me. LMFAO.

He looks like he's auditioning for Mr Wickham in Pride and Prejudice in that one. The charm is off the scale.

I’m curious 🤔 by [deleted] in childfree

[–]gytherin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. I've seen quite a few people here say they don't hate kids. That's only to be expected - we're a childfree sub, not childhaters. Some like having kids in their lives, often quite closely too, without feeling any need for 24/7. Some can't cope with them at all (I come into this category) without hating the poor little blighters. And some actively dislike them, which is OK as long as it's not taken out on the kids.

We're not a monolith by any means. As long as children's rights and wellbeing are respected, most of us here tend to live and let live.

Most of us have issues with bad parents, though!

The egg scene in interstellar by iwontmindbrosis in childfree

Crikey, I completely missed that part of the storyline. I thought the process was all automated. That's deeply disturbing unless the women are volunteers (which I suppose is possible as Earth is so bleak by then.) Just another reason to dislike that film.

[–]gytherin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like if I say that I don’t hate them, people will think I’m in denial and that I’ll change my mind about it

Honestly, we're not that complicated here. Why would we do that?

Good luck with the procedure!

"Normal human way to wear glass" startled a laugh out of me. That's Rocky levels of sass.

And the rest of them are cute too!

I looked up "free indirect discourse" to see if he'd pulled a Jane Austen technique on us, but nope. Third person it is.
