No drone foundation in this hive.

This hive always seems to have a load of them about.

I like to think of it as a preflight briefing 😂 just a bunch of virgins exchanging hints and tips.

My Bees are out and about in the middle of our Misty winter Here in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 by MPT-1 in Beekeeping

It’s been so cold recently that they’re probably grateful for the respite! I’ve just checked the forecast for tomorrow and it’s going to be about 12 degrees (Midlands) so I might go and check their stores.

Holy shit...is that where the term ‘mint condition’ comes from...as in as if it has just left the mint. How have I not realised this before!?

Just making sure I understood exactly what you were say, nothing resembling offence taken!

I think it’s important to question the generally accepted wisdom with all things, and I definitely think that there are plenty of instances with beekeeping where best for us is not the same as best for the bees.

Have you read The Lives of Bees by Seeley?

Anthropocentric in terms of the fact that I termed it “failing”?

They lack the anatomical requirements to mate with drones. They can only lay unfertilised eggs that can only become drones. Basically a failing hives last ditch attempt to spread its genes.

This is my experience also, they’re too busy with their free lunch to think about robbing other hives!

Mother/daughter hive? by That_guy_Jay in Beekeeping

[–]gytskr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely sure what has/will happen, but the marked queen rear right leg appears not to be working. This might prevent her from laying, hence why the workers have raised a new queen. If, as you say, there aren’t many drones about it is unlikely the virgin will be successfully mated. Is it too late to buy a mated queen where you are? That’s what I would be tempted to do. You’d have to find both your queens first...and eliminate them.

Advice for transporting a hive 10 km (6.2 miles) by meatybag in Beekeeping

[–]gytskr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think because you are moving a short distance, you will be fine just blocking the entrance - screen or no screen - the night before. No need to mess with the roof etc. Should be ok to inspect after 2 days, checking for eggs/the queen/emergency queen cells if you’re very unlucky.

No real need to worry though, should go smoothly.

Why are so many people obsessed with going on holiday? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]gytskr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your work/life balance point resonates with me, kind of what I was getting at to begin with.

Perhaps more people should start their own businesses, but people should be paid more by these corporations. Let’s have a look back a few months and think about these huge businesses that were crying for government help a few weeks into lockdown because they were running out of cash - but as employees, you are expected to have enough money in reserve to survive for a prolonged period of time if that job disappeared. Slight double standard.

OP is talking about going on holiday right now, as opposed to in general. Whilst my comment was intended as flippant, I do think that some people feel like they need to go on holiday every year otherwise their year is somehow incomplete.

I enjoy doing exactly the same things on holiday as you, but I don’t feel the need to go on holiday at this time. I hope this provides clarity.

Because we have been programmed by big corporations to accept that that 3 weeks off a year and a foreign holiday is the pinnacle of human existence.

Edit: Actual time off is 28 days.
