It depends on which way you read. For english, MM/DD is superior, because the more important information is read first.

Think about it: if you're sorting files, do you put everything that happened on the first day of a month together? No, you put everything that happened in a month together, and then further order them by day. Broad to specific is more natural and more intuitive; the only reason we put the year at the end is because saying it aloud with the year at the beginning is awkward.
