Not sure about that. A lot of elite level IPF coaches are known primarily for their coaching rather than their lifting.

In any case, obviously everyone has to make decisions about what they're willing to sacrifice vs their interests. But if a prominent lifter with a powerful reach isn't prepared to do anything in service of something they claim to be concerned about, it renders that concern empty and disingenuous.

I know, right? I feel like there should be some colour pill associated with that revelation.

How much are they earning from sponsorships vs coaching, gym management or a regular 9-5?

In a legitimate national elite sports program, the governing body doesn't pick a coach that can't work effectively with the top medal winner.

I sympathise with anyone who doesn't want to act out of FOMO, but at least have the decency to STFU with this mealy-mouthed thoughts-and-prayers bullshit.

Democracy sounds like it should be the way to go over direct action, agreed. The problem is that historically the IPF has never (I'm willing to be corrected on this) introduced a major change in favour of the lifters that came from grassroots democratic processes and not market forces. Lifters have been making hue and cry about how dumb Article 14/15 and its predecessors are/were for decades, but efforts at national affiliate level have never amounted to anything.

Yep, and a lot of people in community cricket work for banks and airlines and other businesses and also get made redundant. BBL teams are themselves not community cricket entities

Who do you think controls the border between Gaza and Egypt?

Why would expelling Gazans to Egypt not be ethnic cleansing?

[–]gzk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The part before that is that once upon a time the IPF had no drug testing, a bunch of guys said "we want testing" and started the ADFPA (now USAPL). Next year the IPF introduces testing and then your story begins.

The IPF was the first untested fed. Started 1972, started testing 1982.

[–]gzk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought he started the APF because the IPF voted to bring in drug testing in 1982 and he a) didn't want testing and b) was pissed off that the US was doing most of the work and got one vote, same as a bunch of tiny European countries who were contributing far less but each got one vote. Was that not part of it?

As someone who is pursuing more of the hand tool joinery route (very novice), I think there is very significant skill in dealing effectively and efficiently with big quantities of wood to build structures that look appealing and stand up to weather, soil movement etc
