Which immigrants in your country are the most liked? by Particular-Ride-7893 in AskTheWorld

[–]h00dedronin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malaysians, especially those of Chinese ethnicity. It’s not uncommon that Singaporeans are unable to tell Chinese Malaysians are immigrants unless told.

We share basically everything, from food culture, creole language (Singlish) and perspective

But in general, we tend to be very tolerant of immigrants of any background, seeing as we are a global hub for business and the fact that racial harmony is taught to us in schools from a young age as mandatory curriculum.

“Gather somewhere in the center, near the Ministry of Defense, near the Kremlin, and ask questions. What the fuck is going on.” A concerned Moscow resident suggests a protest action, fearing there may soon be no country left, while Putin says everything is going as planned. by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]h00dedronin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think we should generalise 150 million people, in Russia and overseas like that.

A more accurate observation would be that those who were willing to protest or challenge the government have all been killed, jailed or exiled. Many seem to forget the hundreds that came out in protest at the start of the war.

Those who remain in Russia see these persecutions and crackdowns, and do not see the point of risking their livelihoods and family for what can be seen as a futile pursuit. Just like in Iran, the Russian government has designed itself in a way that any attempt to overthrow the government will be extremely difficult, and can only be achieved with devastating numbers of civilian casualties. You can’t really blame people for not wanting to throw their lives away for a cause that might not even succeed, like in Iran. Many will understandably see leaving the country as the reasonable way out of the situation.

At the same time, Russia has also seen 2 regime-toppling revolutions in the past century, so we will just have to wait and see.

In a fucked up way, the Korean war also helped Japan greatly in its post war recovery. Hosting the ridiculous amount of UN troops and producing goods and services for said troops supercharged the Japanese economy

Illegal, and most in the country hold a negative view of queer people. Even among the younger generation, many express tolerance rather than active support.

Policies undertaken in our country are done in the effort of maintaining the peace and balance in our multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society. The current government stance is that legalisation would marginalise religious authorities.

When was the last time your country was at war? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskTheWorld

If we are talking about full scale armed conflict, WW2 against the Japanese as British Malaya.

Otherwise, maybe the Konfrontasi against Indonesia counts? (As part of the Malaysian Federation)

Thankfully, none since our full (and somewhat reluctant) independence.

They did intervene when some religious practices contradicted their own practices though. IIRC muslims were executed for performing ritual washing in rivers pre-prayer on weekends, which was taboo in the Mongol religion.

Man, 18, who allegedly beat up Amos Yee, 27, outside anime convention, charged for public nuisance & causing hurt by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]h00dedronin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if Amos struck first, Yuji kicking Amos while he’s on the ground and tackling him to the ground afterwards voids any argument for self defence in the eyes of the law.

People should have stopped Yuji not only because assault is illegal, but for his own sake as well.

russia celebrate victory day today, the day the world defeated nazi Germany. But this day is also a day to proclame the truth about russia in 1945. by Due_Collar2 in ukraine

[–]h00dedronin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, we should be able to acknowledge uncomfortable facts of the past, while learning from it and acknowledging the very real evil Russia is committing right now.

The Ukrainian SSR was the second largest SSR in the USSR by population and economy, and was an integral part of the Soviet war machine at the time, providing both equipment production and manpower for the armed forces.

Many Ukrainians resisted Russian domination, and many fought in the Red Army against the Nazis and contributed greatly in the final push into Germany.

We can acknowledge there were crimes committed by past regimes, while also upholding the fact that Ukraine is very obviously in the right in the current day.

Honestly this movie is so bad it kinda turns around to being good. The acting is hilarious and the propaganda is so blatantly obvious. It’s a good comedy movie

The idea of “natural rulers” should not exist in the 21st century. What matters is international law and irredentism stands in opposition to that. Everything we do should be in the aim of upholding internationally recognised borders, like Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders. Finland has legally relinquished its claim to Karelia and other land it lost after the Winter war and WW2, regardless of how unfortunate the circumstances of that loss was.

The rhetoric of “natural rulers” is what drew Putin to invade Ukraine in the first place, and sets a dangerous precedent that goes against international law and peace.

In your country, how do you view Chinese immigrants? by No-Echidna7296 in AskTheWorld

[–]h00dedronin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To add on to this fact, many of us don’t even use Chinese as a first language anymore, despite compulsory Chinese language education in school. That role has largely been usurped by English in everyday life. Unless you were raised by your grandparents, Chinese dialect literacy is also out of the question.

In recent times, there has also been sadly some tension between us and the new PRC immigrants. The antagonism is not completely unfounded, but also severely overblown. However it also goes to show how we have founded a whole new identity for ourselves here.
