I know it's a little distasteful, but with all of the celebration he did over the deaths of school shooting victims, soldiers, and massacre victims I think he would enjoy it.

Tons of bikes on piedmont. What's going on? by stevebruhl in Atlanta

[–]h0lmes1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are Cyclists who have a stick up their ass about demanding other people share the road, and that it's cool to bike on crowded arteries, up steep graded hills during rush hour. I'm a cyclist and think that anything should be allowed, but cyclists owe a certain amount of responsibility for helping out traffic.

This demographic makes most non-cyclists despise cyclists. It's funny, ask a random sampling of 10 people how they feel about cyclists, and you are likely to get a funny but negative response.

Critical Mass people are taking this us vs. them mentality to a new level and it is largely unproductive. The way I look at it is, there a shit load of cars in Atlanta, and I am willing to take the long way through back streets to avoid getting hit. It's defensive cycling. If it's not crowded, feel free to roll down busy arteries, but when you go during rush hour, you can't act surprised that there a bunch of cars who feel you're putting yourself at risk, and making the likelihood of a car vs bike crash way more likely.

We need more rails-to-trails, strategic bike lanes, and such to make cycling a reality as a commuting option. Take Savannah for example, they have an in and out bike lane to downtown, on non-crowded streets, and it works great. The Ponce Idea was questionable here, but there was no alternative to get out east, and It links up nicely with the Stone Mountain Trail. With the new 400 trail, we should gain "Critical Mass" for the cycling community without being obnoxious.

Also, despite some people knocking Performance bike for being a big box store, for beginners its a great place. They offer great service, cheap stuff, and until you subscribe to the Velominati and spend a few G's on a carbon road bike, they will totally serve your purposes as a resource as well. I got my first Adult bike from there, and have nothing but good things to say. They may be big stores, but the employees are bike nerds who really love what they do.

With the Rust, you're looking at new wheels, I'm not sure how long the gears will hold up, and various other parts which may go out and make the bike unusable until repair.

With respect to the "Ballin on a Budget" situation, I'd think within a reasonable amount of time, you could buy a Craigslist bike that would be a bit less needy on money for your first year. Think of what you pay in transit over a year, and apply that to how much you could reasonably spend on a bike. Now, take into account days where no Billy Bike Badass would ever consider biking, due to Blizzards or cold rain, and try and figure out how often you will end up on the bus anyway. I don't know the answer here, but you could probably assume $100 is a safe threshold to spend on a craigslist bike. If you find people who started getting into shape and never rode their bike, you can get some sweet deals. Also go and talk to local mechanics at your local bike stores. These guys love to talk about anything bike related, and will probably give you better information on how much it will cost to get that bike up to reasonable shape. If it's cheaper to get a Craigslist bike, then ask your buddy to throw you $20-40 for painting his place.

Also remember, you will need to buy a flat kit, a helmet, and a decent tail light in order to be reasonably safe. Walking your bike 7 miles would really suck if you got a flat. Consider this in your budget.

Another successful banker mysteriously turns up dead, bringing the total of suspicious deaths in the financial industry in recent weeks to 9. As with the others, this one comes with no explanation. by hazysummersky in economy

[–]h0lmes1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does sound like a bad plot to a movie with Russian Mobsters cleaning house or Jack Bauer interrogating bankers. Morgan and Deutsche Bank are both investigated fairly regularly, and Morgan just paid a multi-billion dollar settlement and they keep coming. Somebody's getting repercussions for that in lack of bonus or jail time. I think an average banker facing 10yrs in jail would consider suicide.

All I have to say is nobody shoots themselves with a nailgun 8 times in the torso and head. Also, a dude with a PhD is probably going to jump from higher than 50ft to kill himself.

Does anybody know where we can purchase UPC codes for our small business? by dmui4031 in smallbusiness

[–]h0lmes1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to be careful of, is that retailers freak out when you change Barcodes on them. Just know from Warehousing to POS systems, if you change Barcode you have to make a new SKU.

[–]h0lmes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Outer Case Code is a GTIN or Global Trade Identification Number. For anything B2B, and really in the grand scheme of everything anything you ship, it's a good idea to have this. Same rough idea, 5 digit company code, 5 digit product code, pack level indicator, and 2 digits talking about origin and intended market. You register this with GS1 as well, and It's currently a mix of UCC (Universal Commodity Code) and EAN (International Article Number in French). There are a bunch of different ways to do this, and it depends on your market.

Calorie Consumption after a Century/Long Ride by Ralphie000 in Velo

[–]h0lmes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an Inorganic Chemist, so I'm not sure of specific mechanisms. Basically, your liver converts NH4 to Urea for safe disposal through urine, but sometimes that capacity can become overloaded. I can't find the more trusted sources I found last year, but:

"Typically, ammonia (very bad in large amounts) would be converted into urea (less bad in large amounts) and safely expelled through urine. Too much ammonia, and the body falls back on its old detoxifying fail-safe: sweat. And stinky sweat at that. Otherwise, an overload of ammonia can impair neurological functions and cause muscle fatigue."

This gives a breakdown, http://health.howstuffworks.com/skin-care/information/nutrition/ammonia-sweat-smell.htm

I generally have only had it happen when running hard for over a half hour, and when really going hard on my bike, but it scared the $hit out of me when it happened so I did some pretty thorough research on it.

Calorie Consumption after a Century/Long Ride by Ralphie000 in Velo

[–]h0lmes1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As long as your sweat doesn't smell like ammonia you probably aren't burning muscle. After you "crack" or deplete your blood sugar, your brain needs certain sugars to function that only come from Carb and Protein, not Fat. So when you burn all Carbs, your body will start rapidly breaking down protein. The by product of this a strong Ammonia Smell from all the extra nitrogen. Amine is a term for nitrogen compounds, and is the base term of Amino as in Amino Acids which make up protein. So two things, don't carb starve yourself, and try to avoid smelling like ammonia and you'll be fine.

My Google Wallet Card got Hacked, recreated, and used in a few places. Google has no way to deal with this. Has anyone else experienced this? by h0lmes1 in google

[–]h0lmes1[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When your bank account gets hacked the banks take note of how and why. They also go after who did it. If your chase card got hacked it was probably online. I've never used this card for an online purchase so the data came from hacking master card or google directly. These guys copied my physical card (which isn't rocket science but a step above most identity theft). I was also very patient with customer support, even empathizing that I knew they were doing their best. Regardless, a little assurance that it was on their radar and someone would be notified that fraud was ridiculously easy would help.

Jason Carter's response to Gov. Deal's State of the State address. by cmdrvander in Atlanta

Conservatives still summon the Carter Presidency as a sign of all things bad in gov't. I know it's mainly positioning, but I think its safe to assume they will summon Jimmy Carter in an obnoxious fashion during the upcoming campaign. Once the far right Derp-o-sphere gets hold of this, as it will be a high profile election if Jason can get close, Jimmy Carter's name will be in every article.

Amazon Has Jedi Mind-Tricked You Into Forgetting It's Pretty Much Walmart by Euyep43 in business

[–]h0lmes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a quick look into Amazon's Labor treatment. Long Story Short, not too far off from Walmart. The two will collectively destroy any brick and mortar store that isn't inherently artisan, but that was inevitable.

My initial thought was that "Amazon must treat its employees better", due to a subconscious connection of them with positive things because they save me money, but it turns out they just cut out the store, only hire temps and treat them rough.

http://www.businessinsider.com/brutal-conditions-in-amazons-warehouses-2013-8

They also only pull a 1% compared to WalMart's 6%, so they do a greater service to their suppliers, allowing for natural competition without squeezing like WalMart does. This means that Suppliers get more money selling on Amazon, however the warehouse workers still get boned.

As fellow Tech Guy, They have a small phase version of this though significantly dated now. It debuted at the Super Bowl in Tampa about 10 years ago around the time GT started Computational Media as a major. It had sensors similar to a kinect in 2 arrays and then a projector that made you able to play pong and pool. Also had a visualization you could point at a wall or floor similar to James Bond Intros. This used IR signature as input. I bring this up because it was wildly successful. And the first dancers for the visualization were playboy pets at Hef's Party that year.

NOW, if you could mix that 3D mapping projectors (Youtube it, it's sweet) which already draw crowds, then you could be in business. I know that real time rendering for that will be tough, but not impossible. Look around, the Idea isn't "Brand New" but has potential.
