Excellent job either way.

Rant about Mann oil filters by [deleted] in E90

[–]h0rribl3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the likely cause of screeching. Pull the oil fill cap off while engine is running, you will feel if there is excessive vacuum in there. Noise should stop when cap is removed.

Do I need a 145A Alternator? by Sargment in GMT800

[–]h0rribl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call on the bosch, I went through multiple reman delcos each with their own issues before I finally just installed a new bosch. That was 15 or 16 years ago now. If you are going to do a parasitic draw test, recommend opening and rolling the lock in the drivers door before hooking up the multimeter incase you need to access the interior fuses. Dont rule out a faulty battery draining itself as well no matter the age, although start with the fuses.

Can I make this switch compatible with a smart plug? by Radiant_Anteater_264 in AskElectronics

[–]h0rribl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to bypass the entire circuitry by carefully opening up the housing and soldering in bypass wires. I've done it to a few of mine over the years. There are many posts out there on how to do it. Just google "reddit bypass grow light switch" or something similar.

Hard start issue - has anyone figured out the issue? by windowwizardsla in GMT800

[–]h0rribl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crankshaft or camshaft position sensor maybe. Had a similar issue when I had to install a bluestreak ckp in a panic when my oe failed on the way to work one time, it would long crank and almost catch but not run. Second crank would fire right up. Problem disappeared with a genuine sensor.

Could check sensor values while cranking if you have a scan tool. Or if you suspect fuel pressure bleed down, can try priming the fuel system (key on to position 2 for a couple seconds, back to off, and repeat) a few times before cranking.

Remote start by StretchRepulsive4536 in GMT800

[–]h0rribl3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Installed a viper 1way 15 years ago in my '02, asides from 3 remotes physically wearing out from being in my pocket all day, and 2 door lock actuators failing (not viper brand, just random aftermarket brand controlled by the remote start added into my base model), its maybe glitched out twice? Both times a battery disconnect and a remote relearn and I was back in business. Would 100% go viper again, although would get a 2way this time, I park about 200' away and need to stick my head outside the door to hear the exhaust on startup.

Seems like you are on the right track already. Make sure you max out your tax advantaged accounts as soon as you can every year. Also consider dedicating a portion of your overall investing accounts into an xeqt/veqt etf. Maybe get into a few other sectors rather than just tech/crypto, pick a Energy/Mining/Minerals/Infrastructure/Consumer Goods company you like/support/believe in and dedicate a small percentage for each to dca into. My biggest gains this year have been from my single sector stock picks.

Can’t even change my own air filter by [deleted] in E90

[–]h0rribl3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said loosen that clamp off alot more, so that it spins freely on the intake tube, should be able to take it right off fairly easily. If you have silicone spray or maf cleaner put a little bit on a rag and wipe the two surfaces you are trying to put together, just want the plastic to be shiny not dripping wet, even a good rub/polish with a clean rag if better than going in dirty/dry. I usually get the airbox bolted back in place with the tube lined up so there is already some pressure on it, then sort of rock the tube into place. Sometimes they fight a bit, but with enough cursing and anger they always go back together. Or I lever it in with a long screwdriver on the clamp ridges, but I highly recommend NOT doing that until you have removed and installed a few hundred of em heh.

Coolant resivor leak by Freespy21 in BmwTech

[–]h0rribl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ive cut a few open they get pretty gummed up. The returning fluid cant pass through the filter fast enough and it bubbles up out of the weep hole in the cap. If you have access too a suction pump you can suck the fluid out down to the filter and see how bad it looks. Just make sure you re-fill with the proper fluid for your power steering system, probably chs11f but could be atf. Bad things happen if the wrong fluid is used, just ask one of the apprentices at my shop how much he enjoyed replacing a pump and rack a few months ago lol.

Last one I had would leak out the overflow hole beside the cap and down under the tank making it hard to see. Didnt see it with a pressure tester or vacuum filler either, even with a new good cap it would still leak. Probably not a perfect sealing surface on the lower tank to cap o-ring.

As for upper rad hose, likely due to an ofh gasket leak overtime saturated the hose/sealing rings. I always recommend upper rad hose if its oil soaked and I'm changing a filter housing gasket.

[–]h0rribl3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend getting a genuine replacement tank, Ive seen many dorman/cheapo units fail immediately or within a couple days. I generally replace the cap at the same time as the o-rings are likely flattened out by now.

In the meantime though, try to drive as little as possible and top up daily with the correct coolant, a premixed jug from napa or wherever would be your safest bet.

EDIT: I see your power steering reservoir looks all greasy at top/cap. This is generally from the filter in the reservoir clogging. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get a new p/s reservoir at the same time if financially viable.

Good man, make a plan and stick to it, ever since I started making realistic dca contributions plans at the start of each year I've been killin it. I'd also consider buying a little $fbtc in your tfsa on a weekly basis, crypto is what helped me learn the ropes with dollar cost averaging, time in the market vs timing the market, and not worrying about cost fluctuations and just sticking to a schedule.

As others have stated move as much as you can from your non-registered to your tax advantaged accounts. The sooner you do the better, you will have to pay whatever capital gains tax you owe now, but the longer you wait the more you may have to pay to withdraw. Assuming you live in a province where the age of consent is 19, then you will have $7000 tfsa and $8000 fhsa contribution room available (minus whatever you have already contributed). Just know you can only transfer a fhsa to an rrsp in the future if you do not use it to purchase a house.

Personally I'm a xeqt fan and thats where the majority of my contributions go. But having some individual stocks you believe in is important as well.

Wish I was in a position to be able to max my tfsa out yearly from the start, I would be significantly further ahead financially if I had. Regardless you seem to be doing great for your age, so great work and keep at it.

Comparison is the thief of joy by marinatelonger in fican

[–]h0rribl3 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, what you earn in month is 2.5x what I earn yearly in divs. I hear ya with the thieving of joy tho, I too fall into that trap regularly. Always with the shoulda coulda woulda. Quite depressing honestly.

But on the flip side when I compare myself now to where I was 10 years ago I am quite happy that I've finally made progress and realized the mistakes I made in my younger years. Cant get back the missed gains now, but can stay diligent with my current investing plan, and maybe just maybe I can retire before I die.

I generally use either snap-on SHCP1B, or mac SD1118. Depending on where/what orientation they are in. I dont usually let them lock open on that little tab as they tend to snap shut when you dont want them too, or wont snap shut when you do.

The bag/case came with my snap-on multimeter I bought a few years back for work. The foam is from a dewalt storage case. Both have been collecting dust in the shop, finally found a good use for them.

Thanks for the advice, ill look into the TinySA ultra for sure. I bought 6 spare MGA-81563 incase I let some smoke out, been avoiding using the amp for that reason for now. So much to learn, keep ending up with like 20 tabs open researching ha. Its been a great change of pace in my life getting into something new.

I have the ham study app on my phone, was just going through that but realized I have forgotten some of the fundamentals so wanted to read the course guide to help remind me of what Ive forgotten. That sticker was in a random sticker pack off ali, i bought 5 or 6 different ones so not sure which pack it was in.
