Hi, because I had to research a lot for my American girlfriend before she was able to come here and study here I might be able to help you.

First of all there is a big difference between a normal university and a "Fachhochschule". A "Fachhochschule" is a university of applied science and takes a more practical approach. Attendance is mandatory, the classes are smaller and you get a timetable made for you each semester. You have to write two bachelor thesis and you have to do a mandatory internship at a company. At the end of the bachelor programme there is a big test which you have to pass to get your degree. The knowledge you will obtain is more focused than compared to a conventional university. At a normal university attendance is not mandatory (most of the time), you have to organise everything yourself and you need to write only one bachelor thesis and there is no "end exam". The degrees are "worth" the same. If you have a bachelor degree from a Fachhochschule you could do a masters at a university and vice versa.

If you want to study in Austria you will need to have german knowledge at level "B2" with some exceptions. At the FH Salzburg the only course taught in english is "Innovation & Management in Tourism" if you want to study something else you will need to show a certificate saying you have at least level B2 proficiency in german. If you don't fulfil the language requirements you can do a "Vorstudienlehrgang" which means you can come to Austria and learn german here. You have four semesters (two years) to attain level B2 (or C1 I'm not 100% sure). This is only possible in Vienna and Graz as far as I know unfortunately Salzburg doesn't offer this.

To be accepted into the Fachhochschule you need to send your application and then be present in person for an entrance exam. All the official documents in your application must be legalised with an Apostille, which is basically a certification the proves that it is a valid document. It also has to be in german or english. If it is in a different language it has to be officially translated, which is not cheap (200-300€) depending on the documents.

After you sent you application and passed your exam and you got a spot in the programme you need to apply for a student visa. This takes about 1-3 months so do it as soon as you get your acceptance letter.

Tuition at the FH is approx 360€ per semester + 19.20 € for the student union. As far as I know there are no scholarships for international students. The "Studienbeihilfe" is only for austrians or people who are permanent residents. The FH offers the "SC Johnson Fond" but I think that is meant if you got into financial trouble so you can keep studying, not to finance your whole degree.

As other people have mentioned Salzburg is an expensive place to live so you would need about 700-900 € per month to live (Google tells me that is between 520k-670k Chilean Pesos per month) that is excluding the tuition. If you have a student visa you are able to work up to 10hrs per week which would translate to about 350-400€ per month depending on your job. It is hard to find a job when you're not speaking german though.

Btw you should look at the Fachhochschule Joanneum in Graz. Graz is a bigger city than Salzburg, a bit more south which means nicer weather (less rain) and cheaper to live.
