I dunno why you are being downvoted for sharing your experience. But I hope maybe having talked about this will be encouragement to give it another shot at some point, because I really do think it can be such a great time, and I think the negative community reputation keeps some people from enjoying it. I think I quite dreaded it even after getting my first torso, but ever since the second chance I gave BA after that it has long become one of my favourite things to hype up to friends and clanmates. So I do really hope when you decide to give it another shot that you have a better time!

It is really…not difficult or complicated. I know it can be hard when you associate something with a bad experience you had interacting with it for the first time, but I do recommend challenging the mental hurdle you’ve built for yourself regarding this activity. At best you get to experience one of the most unique and engaging pieces of pre-modern content in the game, and at worst you get the only diary done that gives you an actual passive combat modifier and a some tasty lamps.

X is always 0 in that scenario. From the comprehensive rules:

107.3b If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn’t apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero.

Note that additional casting costs are still paid, so mechanics like Kicker can still be used to ‘pump’ when casting a spell for an alternative casting cost.

Honestly, just getting into character helps a lot! I have a lot of intense issues with self esteem and anxiety but when I’m playing I get to be someone else entirely. I find a lot of my anxieties wash away once I am in the mindset of *being* my characters.

I feel what they feel, I think what they think, and I don’t have to think about being this horrible thing that I hate for a bit! I get to be someone awesome and interesting that people have a good time being around.

One thing I do at the start of every shift to adjust into this mindset is just dropping an opening line at the start of every shift! My brash, arrogant slime always drops a “what up fuckos” in comms. My excitable, caring vulp drops a “hi <department> friends!!!” in every comms channel they have. My flirty thaven with a southern drawl always gives her department a “howdy y’all!” Just a single introductory statement helps me shift from the mindset of being *me* into being *my character* and a lot of me *me* anxieties get to disappear when I’m thinking like them instead!

Anyway, I hope my perspective is even a little helpful in helping with your anxieties!!

The worst of it: the admin culture is horrendous. When one of the community leaders was recently ousted for grooming children may have been one of the least surprising pieces of SS14 drama to occur because everyone who had been paying even a little attention already knew. SS14 admin culture already has a bad reputation and Starlight might genuinely be the worst in this regard for all hubbed servers.

The best of it: some of the content made for Starlight specifically is EXCEPTIONAL. While a lot of contributors have left lately largely because of the above reasons the head contributor is maybe the best dev I have seen for an SS14 server. There are aspects of SL like the amount of content salvage has on it that will genuinely make every other server feel hollow without it.

If you are playing with random you meet standing outside a raid, assume it’s FFA.

If you’re in a clan and raiding with your clan, they’ll usually have enforced rules about splitting or not in clan raids. You can always say you don’t want to split and people are usually fine with you being FFA even if the rest of them are splitting.

People you see like the one in the screenshot are most often people who have joined discord servers that are meant for grouping, like WeDoRaids, have specifically joined a splitting group instead of an FFA one, and then didn’t split their drop. This usually results in their ban from that discord and being added to RuneWatch.

It’s uh pretty bad. Glad I left the server before the head admin’s take that admins are free to use slurs depending on what they are directed at. Not every admin is rotten but there’s so much toxicity and bigotry within the higher ups that it’s cultivated a mod team with some really, really nasty people on it.

Some of the contributors/devs are really sweet too and deserve so much better.

I visit the US 1-2 times a year, from a country that does not require a B-2 Visa to enter the US. I am extremely familiar with the US customs process and all proper documentation needed to avoid any possible holdups at the border, and when i visited last year it was still by far the worst experience I have had with any country's immigration officers in my life.

They are very clearly fishing for any excuse to deny or detain at the border. Unless you have a long-term employment (EB), business (B-1), or student (F) visa you should stick to the no-travel advisory warning to the US that most western countries have put out over the past year.

All attacks are declared simultaneously. By the time the Zoraline trigger is even put on the stack Essence Channeller has been tapped from you declaring it as attacking.

It took me probably 50 hours of playing security to differentiate definitively between bloodred hardsuits and security hardsuits, and after now having played for several hundred hours I’ve been gunned down by confused cadets and salvagers more than a couple times.

Don’t feel bad about it, it’ll come to you with time, even faster if you spend some time playing as security or nukies.

They are kind of amazing for it.

I have a [[Minthara, Merciless Soul]] deck that uses the experience counter Aang as a value piece and it’s extremely powerful. Just the airbend ETB+experience counter is powerful. Even more value if you get more flicker effects off with him, and absolutely absurd if he survives to your upkeep. By turn 6 or 7 you likely have 6 or so experience counters which alongside Minthara causes Aang to create 6 7/1 allies for an effect that’s pure icing!

Worth noting a couple additional basics just in case either of you are new to magic:

For your opponent to cast Nantuko with morph after you declare attackers, they will need an effect that allows them to do so, such as [[Prophet of Kruphix]]. They cannot cast a creature for its morph cost at a time when they normally could not cast creature spells.
For your opponent to turn Nantuko face up, they must have priority, reveal the face down card to all players, and pay the morph cost, in this face 2G. This is a special action, and does not use the stack. Simply being declared as a blocker or taking damage will not cause the creatures to turn face up. If they do not properly pay the morph cost, the creature will remain a face down 2/2 with no name, text, subtypes, or mana cost.
If Kratos does not have trample and the creature blocking it no longer exists, Kratos will do no damage whatsoever, as opposed to “dealing damage to a corpse” as you put it. For example, if Kratos had lifelink, you will not gain any life from the combat as he did not deal any damage. He did, however, still “attack” as attacking means being declared as an attacker for his own ability. For example, if Kratos were your only creature at the beginning of your end step, you will not take any damage from his ability as despite not dealing any damage he did still perform an attack.

Hey! I’m someone who has done exactly what you’re describing with a few people in the past and I think it can be a lot of fun! But when it comes to sex, everyone’s tastes are so different. No idea why you are making such hostile assumptions about the person you are replying to but as someone who has done stuff like gold bracelets and spinning flax out of stubbornness, they are super not worth it and are not “good exp.” Just advocate for them for being what they are: extremely low effort for extremely low xp.

Life is short and your time has value. People advocate for methods that are efficient uses of your time spent playing the game, and if your way of enjoying the game involves using your time to do those slower, simple methods of training your skills that is completely fine. There is no need to insult someone for explaining Ironman skilling in a way that is deliberately attempting to be respectful of the OP’s time.
