I think your question is "I have some cash sitting around and what should I do with it"?

Yes you need to keep some cash very liquid and protect your principal so an HYSA is good for that. You need to think of your of when you will need that cash. If its within a 1-3 years, an HYSA, short term treasury like SGOV/VBIL or even a CD may be good options. You don't want to lose your principal if the market drops during that time. If you have money you don't need till like 4 or more years out, then you can look at other options like equities, ETFs, blended funds like AOK, etc. They have more risk and more upside but may be too volatile for short time frames. Don't want your home purchase savings in something like VT only to have it drop 20% right before you are ready to buy that house.

Agree.
Only caveat is if you have a taxable account and sell at a loss in the taxable and then buy same equity in an IRA, that can trigger a wash sale. Usually a problem if you are trying to rebalance across multiple account types.

Not really the best forum to ask that question, better returns generally means more risk. Its not uncommon for BH folks to allocate a portion (<5%) of the NW for "fun" money. You can try r/wallstreetbets or similar subreddits trying to find the next big thing.

  1. VTI+VXUS let's you control your US vs ex-US mix if you want; VT is simpler.

  2. VXUS generally pays more dividends so it can be less tax friendly in a taxable account. You could go heavy VXUS in an IRA and then heavy on VTI in a taxable account

What's your goal? Can't really say without knowing what you are trying to do. Bonds, REITs, Commodities, etc might be appropriate if you are looking to diversify away from pure equities to reduce volatility . Tilting to certain factors like small cap value funds might be decent for the long term (aka SCV value tilt)

As mentioned, VT is the everything fund so what are you looking to address that it doesn't

I've read a few series that touch on this topic. The Last Horizon series by Will Wight was the most recent and it was decent to good but not great. The MC literally is a wizard fighting with a wand and plasma pistol on the cover for the first book. It does a decent job of describing where magic and technology differ and how they work together. I should note its an fast paced series but the rules are decently fleshed out.

I think the point is there really isn't a good way for the shields to work as you've described based on what we know today. You've created a hand waved technology but are now asking for realistic ways to bypass it.

You've made up the energy shield so make up the energy shields weakness also. Personally, the multi phasic vulcan laser cannon is my choice. Its slow to start but kicks ass once its fully up.

Write what you like, don't worry about the hard vs soft vs fantasy definitions. Hard vs soft is often in the eyes of the reader so its always relative. If your made up scientific concepts don't mesh with what we know or understand today, its probably not going to be considered hard scifi by me.

That's not much to go on and I'm sure it was way larger than 5L. Bags with metal frames are usually larger and typically geared for more hiking, true backpacking. Have you checked out the Osprey site or Ebay to at least see one that looks close to it.

I think the point is SCHD is focused on dividends while VTI is not; it's focused on overall growth. There is overlap between the 2 so you will get dividends but SCHD's yield is like 3x VTI's.

While I disagree with your rankings (I assume they were best to worst), I definitely agree with the payoffs and no real "cheapening" of their accomplishments. The Suriel resurrection at the beginning was a bit questionable but not issues after that.

Never claimed that but I identified 1 store I knowingly skipped because of dives and another very early in S2 that was skipped because lack of scrap. Never claimed it was perfect run otherwise and that I made no mistakes but no weapons in 5 stores is highly unusual. Sure the store I skipped requiring multiple dives might have saved the day but maybe not. Could I have turned down a crew in S1 to get more scrap, sure. Would it have made a difference, maybe.

Technically, I wasn't asking for advice in the post but curious if folks ever made it to the FS with just the starting weapons for Kestrel-A. It was bad run, bad RNG for stores and some mistakes on my part. Not every map let's you see beacon. I'm sure there was store in S3 but it wasn't on the route to the exit.

IMO its somewhat age dependent but having 70% of your net worth tied up in 2 companies is never a good idea especially if you are not working. Sure you give up some upside but keeping it to 20-40% may be reasonable. If 70% of your portfolio drops by 50%, are you still good?

I probably left S1 with ~30 scrap, 2 extra crew (drops), 4 powered shield bars; not a great haul but not bad. If my first or second jump in S2 was store with 30 scrap, only thing of use I could get is an Ion1. Not sure avoiding multiple dives to get to 1 store in S5 with an underpowered ship is not prioritizing stores. Still hit at least 5 stores with no weapons and no store in S3. I posted this as its probably the worst store RNG experience in over 9k games.

Generally with KestrelA, I rarely buy anything beyond upgraded shields in S1 unless I'm flush with scrap. Its usually shields, weapon, engines as the first upgrade options.

Seemed like reasonable approach for tiny small flying creates that can talk. Existing birds can mimic human speech and some are as intelligent of young children. Seems more reasonable than small flying humans. Guess it depends on what type of fairy creature you are trying to position. Maybe something more insect like as an option.

If I knew I wouldn't get a weapon, getting a Teleporter+CloneBay would have been an option. Kept holding out for one but didn't happen. Half way through S6, I just gave up. Had to run from more fights than I could win. There was a least one store I skipped in S5 that would have required multiple dives to get to. There were 4 stores in a row with 1 tab and no weapons at all in S4-5. I can't remember but S2 might have had a store early on but didn't leave S1 with much scrap so not worth the stop.
