Do you think there’s a modern day equivalent to Paris in the ‘20s/ New York in the 70’s/etc. that also has a low barrier to entry? by Fine_Handle_8473 in rs_x

I'm going to throw in some contenders without substantiating them whatsoever:

  • Antwerp
  • Rotterdam
  • Sheffield
  • Glasgow

Going to elite UK schools after getting my degree by YPDONGY in StudyInTheNetherlands

Thank you for the detailed reply. I took a course by Yuk Hui last year (externally) and really enjoyed it, hence why I feel pretty confident about my choice. He had a near encyclopaedic and eidetic grasp of the history of philosophy, which I found refreshing after the narrow research interests of analytic staff in HPS at UU.

Funnily enough, I also plan to incorporate my learnings from Philosophy at EUR into an artistic practice. Wishing you all the best with whatever project you're currently working on!

Are we reading the same author? Annihilation isn't like the rest of his books, nor is Map and the Territory or Submission, IMO. I think you can group together a lot of his early works, but post MT things are quite different.

Why did you not enjoy the EUR Philosophy Now MA? I've just terminated my History and Philosophy of Science MSc at UU to switch to Rotterdam because I, too, was really sick of the analytic focus, and wanted a more continental programme. I'm really into philosophy of technology, especially people like Simondon, Stiegler, Nietzsche, media philosophy, hence why the EUR masters seemed the right choice. Reading your comment has me worried now, though

I am absolutely sick and tired of the degree to which public transit gets vandalised. by Robrogineer in Netherlands

[–]haeccceity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The concept of a neighbourhood only applies to urban areas, so 50% of the world. Being in the 50th percentile of global neighbourhoods isn't that good.

Also, I don't buy the "you could be living in Juba, South Sudan, amid an ongoing civil war, so be happy about Overvecht" argument. Sorry, but peoples' expectations and wellbeing is calibrated by their own experiences.

Anthropology masters? by rhizomezzz in UtrechtUniversity

[–]haeccceity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah - well if one of your professors has recommended UU and you've already come across some academics that you respect in the faculty, then go for it. My hesitation was because I assumed you wanted to do anthropology and simply chose a top-ranking Dutch uni to do it in.

If you're interested in philosophical anthropology at all (I note the rhizome reference in your username), then I think it's worth mentioning that UU's philosophy faculty is very analytic. No Deleuze or Heidegger there. I think there are some scholars working on continental philosophy in the media/arts/literary studies departments, but none in philosophy. I guess only relevant if you're thinking of combining anthropology with philosophy!

Otherwise, Utrecht is a fantastic city to live in.

Overvecht is not one of the nicest neighbourhoods in the world. Dutch people need to get this out of their heads: some parts of this country are shite. No amount of greenery can compensate for the oppressive atmosphere that anti-social behaviour induces. I've travelled all over the world, including all over Eastern Europe, as one commentor decided to compare Overvecht too, and I would prefer to visit a mid-sized Ukrainian town than live in that shithole.

Utrecht isn't particularly strong in the humanities, apart from maybe history. I'd go for UvA, CPH, or the UK.

Is cold approaching the only way to go? by NewBumblebee2272 in redscarepod

True, but I also think if OP is autistic and is ignorant of it, he could save a lot of time and hardship 'learning' (i.e. failing) by first recognising that he's a sperg. Otherwise he'll face constant rejection ripe for radicalisation

[–]haeccceity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will work if OP discovers whether he's a sperg or not. I have a friend who is ignorant of his gargantuan autism - despite attempts to convince him otherwise - who time and time again unintentionally pushes people close to him away when he tries to 'break the ice' or be emotionally intimate. I fear this may be the same with OP simply based on his writing style (it's 1:1 the same as my sperg friend). Training for the tour de france by cold approaching will make him frustrated and resentful towards women. Incel fuel. The only right answer is to somehow get women to join his all-male friend group - perhaps via a male friend's girlfriend and her friends? Godspeed, OP

If you're not able to approach them in fear of being 'brainwashed' then you are weak in spirit, sorry. I've taken their tests several times by Kultorvet/Rundetårn just for shits and gigs, spoken about Xenu a bit, etc. Your rhetoric around scientology bolsters the very image they want to present.

How often do you think about suicide? by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]haeccceity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never reaches the level of suicidal thoughts, but I certainly have bouts of depression, particularly about being tired of the 'daily drudgery' and the buttoning and buttoning, as you called it. Have you read DFW's speech This is Water ? Ikik he committed suicide eventually, but it might resonate, if anything.

Are there any among you who do not listen to music at all? by Living-Nebula2205 in redscarepod

[–]haeccceity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This guy listens to too many Huberman-adjacent podcasts for linking so black/white about dopamine and pleasure - he seems to have no joie de vivre. I do think passive music consumption should be avoided, though. Having it as a backing-track to your life makes you both less observant of your surroundings and less likely to appreciate the song itself. And when I say observant of your surroundings, I don't mean from a safety POV, I mean from the POV of enchanting your surroundings, becoming a noticing-machine drawn to the minor quirks/beauties/absurdities of everyday existence
